I’m in the market for an affordable (about $400 or less) compact, DA/SA, double-stack 9mm for range/nightstand use or occasional OWB CCW. It would definitely prefer a decocker or hammer-drop safety rather than manually thumbing the hammer down. Among new guns so far the Bersa TPR9C is looking pretty good. I wouldn’t mind a good used gun and I am considering a used S&W 6906 or something like that. I am open to other suggestions, new or used. Cheers, Matthew

I was thinking you might be able to pick up a used SIG SP2022 for less than $400. It's about as "compact" as a P229, so not really compact by today's standards. CZ P01 perhaps, if you get very lucky, although even heavily used ones around here are treated like gold. Does it matter to you if it's metal or polymer frame?

Thanks, all. Some quick replies... I generally prefer metal frames but I am not opposed to polymer. Most of the other suggestions are too big (SP2022, P01, PCR) or substantially over the budget (P-07 is interesting but PX4s coming up closer to $500 for me). Among the CZ 75 clones I don't want a gun from Turkey, which leaves the EAA/Tanfoglio pistols but they don't have a decocker. So I am still thinking about a trade-in S&W 6906 from AIM Surplus for $350 or a new Bersa TPR9C for not much more. Keep those suggestions coming!

Thanks, guys. I'm not sure that PX4 is actually new but I'll keep it in mind. It's odd that S&W would not offer parts support for pistols still in production just 20 (corrected) years ago. :-/

I think it's a little closer to 20 years ago when they stopped production on most of the S&W metal framed autos.

Oops, my mistake.
West Virginia State Police did take delivery of around 750 of the S&W 4566 TSW's back in 2011, and I remember it because they hadn't made any for about a decade and it seemed odd that they were able to get S&W to make them. I guess it was proof (at least at that time) if you wanted enough of them, S&W would crank up the assembly line and produce them. However, that was a while ago.

Speaking of Gander Outdoors, I just noticed the OP is in Northwest Florida. The Pensacola Gander looks like they are going out of business (again) and are having a big sale, including firearms. You may find what you're looking for.

If you find a good used CZ 'PCR' you can afford/justify, that's my vote.

You might not find a beauty queen within your price range, but it's certainly possible.
An attractive example appeared in nearby Memphis for about that price (on Armslist), after I acquired my used PCR in a local gun shop. Mine has had a perfect operation-over 1,000 rds. total.

The Taurus G2C is the latest incarnation of the... did it used to be a PT111 or something like that? They have a good reputation. I like mine. You can get them under $200 from some places. I paid $20 extra for stainless. I think it is striker fired though. Duh.

Is SAR Turkish? I have owned two of their compact polymer CZ75 "clones" both are/were good reliable shooters. They were $229 and $249, IIRC.

Bud's Gun Shop has new Beretta PX4 Storm Compacts with two 15 round mags for $436. They also have new CZ P07s with two 15 round mags for $405.

The P07 is a very solidly built gun with decent sights and a great trigger system. It also gives you the option of having a decocker (which is the way I believe they come from the factory), or a thumb safety. I converted mine to having a thumb safety as I prefer to carry it in Condition One. Extremely easy to do and all parts needed to make the conversion come with the gun.
