Hi y'all,

I have a question in regards to the age to purchase a suppressor. Since Iowa made it legal to own suppressors just recently :what:. I am eager to start the trust, but I am only 20 (turning 21 in late August). That being said, when does the '21' rule start? When I start the NFA application? Or when I physically receive the suppressor?

You fill out your 4473 when you pick the suppressor up. However, technically you purchase the suppressor before you are actually in possession of it, and the law requires you to be 21 to do that. As much as it sucks, I think you have to wait until August bud. Maybe someone will come along and be able to quote the actual law.

My educated guess would be that the worse case scenario is when the ATF is reviewing your form 4 which is typically at least a couple months after you send everything in.

Hopefully someone else will chime in.

It just dawned on me. Every time I get a new NFA item, they make a copy of my drivers license at the time of purchase. Even though I have been going to the same shop for many years, they know me by name, I'm clearly over 21 (unfortunately) and I use a trust, they still require my license. I wonder if they are doing so to verify I am over 21 in case the ATF comes in to audit them.

Must just be your local shop's policy. I'm waiting on a form 4 to come back and I haven't given my local shop my drivers license. Until you take possession there's no crime (if you were underage).
