Aggressive, pet eating coyote advice

How about leave the coyote alone? Second choice, get your mom a can of bear spray, and carry a 38/357.

People let pets out, think of the coyote as providing Darwin's natural selection.
I've got a coyote that we are pretty sure has been eating catfood we leave out for what we think was an abandoned cat, and our visiting skunk. One morning, crows are going crazy, Coyote is bold as brass, jogging straight to our porch, with eyes on it. Crows scared him off. I ran outside with my 300 mm lens, and Nikon, and, tried to take a few pictures. Meanwhile, the crows had warned all the cats, so they were now all on 2nd story perches, and, I followed the coyote. At about 140 yards, I got two pictures. I tried coming out of the bushes, and bracing against a tree, but, as soon as he/she saw me that coyote bounded into the thick stuff, and was gone.

Nature sure is amazing, and the way it works...

How about no? It's following people around and eating pets and a potential human danger. It's an animal, and it's life is of lower value than that of the ones it's threatening. Nature gets a lot less amazing and wonderful when it's stalking your family. It will be shot one way or another. Think of me with a gun as natural selection.

Coyotes are by nature scavenger first hunter second. They will sooner scrounge up a meal that go attack a dog etc. to eat. Coyotes arn't going to attack for the hell of it, unless rabid or otherwise desperate or sick, or cornered.

Coyotes certainly will attack for the hell of it -- my brother lost 20 sheep in one night, all with their throats ripped out and none of them eaten.

I stand corrected, guess that the coyotes here in PRK are more PC than the ones in the free world.:D

See, drowning them is hardly bad, those poor sheep had no defense and were brutially murdered. Are you sure it wasn't aliens:neener:

Closure please!!!!!

So, What happened?? Did ya cap the doggie??? Trap him?? Use a space based laser platform to fry him?? I'm dying to know???

(me obssesive??)

I also want to know want happened. Pictures would be nice.

Something like this;
"I capped him"
Here's a picture of him dead...
this is the new coyote rug I made mom for christmas...

or this

"I'm a dirty hippie and decided to start feeding the coyote so it would leave my pets alone. It has more right to be here than I do":neener: :neener:

Heheh, sorry guys, you'll to wait about a week. I'm in eastern Washington right now, and I'll be here until next weekend when I can clean that thing up. My mother bought some bear spray and only walks the dog with a group of neighbors. I left a .357 revolver with them. A cage trap has been set out by my neighbor who also had his cat attacked, but no luck so far. The animal is still aggressive and frequently intrudes on property, so far as to walk up onto someones back porch! I intend to kill it next weekend. I've had a very generous offer by a nearby forumite to lend me a .22 rifle, if I fail to take it with the bow, I'll use a rifle and just shoot it in the head.

things that make you go "hmmmmm"

This thread has raised another question in my tiny little mind...would 17HMR be an appropriate caliber for this application? Never touched one off myself. But this may just be a good excuse for a pre-holiday trip to the Bass Pro Shop!~

Talk wioth a couple neighbors. If one objects just hope the yote eats his dog.

If agreeable shoot it and be done with it. I know Wa has some foolish trapping and it sounds like the yotes are coming home to roost.

Are you back from eastern WA yet? Did you kill it this weekend? We want details!!!!!

(BTW, I'm in the shoot, shovel, shut up camp. This is way past living with nature and all that stuff. This thing's a menace and needs to die before some human does.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is only illegal within city or town limits to discharge a firearm without proper cause...

If a town ordnance regulates against using a firearm, does that mean you couldn't use a CCW to defend yourself? No. As long as defending yourself against uninstigated attacks on your life or person is not illegal,
you're good to go.

If you can legally carry on your property, then shoot it, and drag it well onto your property. Afterall, it did attampt to eat you whilst gardening in your yard. What am I missing?

I want to see pictures when you get it. :D

Iheard fur prices are going back up you should look around and see if there are any buyers in your area.

As of Sunday night, I am back and armed. My laptops AC adapter has burned out, so I won't be able to post that often. It seems the coyote hasn't been making daily appearances since the wind storm last week, although I intend to do some active scouting for it tomorrow. My direct neighbor's trap is still empty, but I'm told there've several people here who've been talking of shooting it. There will be a story when I get it. I'm going to get some range time to polish off any rust for now.

Update: It has been shot, by the man who lives across the greenbelt! Went and saw the body today. It must've left our place to go haunt him for a while. When we spotted it in the woods, it looked only about half the size of our dog, but up close, it looks to be around 50 lbs. Goodbye to this nuisance. I do feel a bit of disappointment at not being the one to kill it myself after all the prep. As a side effect though, my parents have become somewhat more safety conscious and now carry the OC regularly when they go for walks.

Now the feral cat population may explode (refer to Art's post #72) and, the cat owners will whine because their house cats are getting beat up.

:p

Great to hear the threat is now gone. Too bad you didn't get to do it:(

If the ferrel cat population "explodes" then ya'll will have some more targets running around:neener:
Honestly, I'd rather have ferrel cats running around my neighborhood than coyotes. We've had both here. Back 5 years ago, before all the housing went in and put a buffer between us and nature, we had coyotes at night all the time, even packs of coyotes. A pack killed and drug my neighbor's rottweiler(sp) over a 5' fence. The ferrel cats we now have may beat up a few house cats but they haven't been eating pets and threatening people (yet). And an airsoft or bb pistol is a great means of non-lethal force to deter them from being in your yard:evil:

Just now noticed this post.

One of my favorite topics.

My take on this: indoor cats are housepets, outdoor cats are:
abandoned,
pests,
fair targets,
coyote food
traffic bumps

I routinely trap and kill about a half dozen cats a year. They are a distinct health hazard, harmful to the bird population (and therefore responsible for increasing the insect population and again, illness) and other native species.

When I lived in Hawaii I had the natural resources guy at my house at least twice a week to take the cats I'd trapped and swap out a new trap.

Here I trap and either drown them or cap them (doesn't take much, super colibri or a .22 air rifle).

I own dogs, and keep them on a leash and voice control. I keep them inside, they're almost family.

I actually like cats, I grew up with them; I'm also highly allergic to them. My wife and I never let the cats outdoors when we had them.

Anyway, the way it works is this: large havahart trap and a rain barrel full of water. Trap cat, drown cat, leave out in the woods for the fox/possum/coyote/buzzards to eat. Put collar out on the nearest stop sign post.

That is, if the local coyote population isn't doing their job.

Not a personal attack, but...

I don't think killing people's outside pets is THR. Killing ferrel cats is a necessity but people that kill pets because they spend a little time outside and wind up in their traps give a bad name to hunting and firearms when they shoot a caged pet.

I am aware of all the peoblems caused by ferrel cats and I'll be first on the draw to "control the population" but that's a far cry from killing pets with collars.

I have cats -- indoor cats. Cats are an introduced species, just like startlings, zebra mussels and so on -- but more damaging to the envioronment. If you like cats, fine -- keep them indoors.

To those who simply must let their dogs and cats roam, I say "keep them the hell off my property."

thats why a nice loud color of collar is in order. make sure anyone shooting knows when its a pet. help avoid mistakes.

im lucky enough to have a dog that has no desire to leave the yard. he doesnt even try to get out when the gates open. in fact, he wont even follow us outside the yard cause he knows hes not allowed outside the yard without a leash. good luck training a cat to stay inside tho. colorful collars are about all you can do to warn people that you cat or dog is not a stray.

I was actually expecting a longer, more drawn out hunt. I guess this coyote HAD REALLY lost it's fear of humans. The ones around here you don't ever see, and, if you do, they don't let you much inside 150 yards, before they are gone.

Getting a shot would have been incredibly difficult, and, long range.

Guess this coyote was much different.

I agree cats should be indoor pets. We have a feral cat that is an indoor cat, and she's wonderful, if you don't mind having your rug and furniture torn up. Still, that's a price you pay for your choices. Why wouldn't you have a watch dog inside the house, if you had coyotes, mountain lions, bears, etc. in the area?

My cats are indoor cats. If one of my cats got out and got shot.

I would hire the A-team to find the person who did it.

Good to hear that the yote is no longer a problem.

I would discourage anyone from going the anti-freeze route mainly because I doubt it would work. Getting a coyote to ingest enough to have the desired effect isn't going to be practical.

I grew up on a ranch, from time to time when working on equipment, oil pans with anti-freeze were left on the shop floor or some would get spilled and left in a puddle for a day or so. Not one time did the family dog or cats come up missing. I also know a few people that have tried to get rid of various pests with the anti-freeze method and none of them were successful. If you want to use poison then get something that will do the job. My personal preference is lead poison :D
