Hey guys, im freaking out. I have a marlin 7000 (all black with target/bull barrel), and today i noticed that there were little rust spots forming/showing on the barrel. I grabbed a bit of polish to see if i could get it off, in my newbness, and It turned the area a lighter color/less black then the rest. The small bit of orage color was gone, but there were still the tiny rough spots.

But anyway, what should i do? Is there anything i can do to remove this in a proper way? I clean the gun regularly, and oil it, but i guess the area it was being stored in just wasnt good enough.

Help!

Thanks!!

Get some 0000 steel wool and any good light gun oil, or even 3-in-1 oil. Rub some oil into the rust(saturate it well) & let it sit & soak a few minutes to over night, depends on how patient you are. :D Then put several drops more oil onto your pad of 0000 steel wool, & begin rubbing gently. Be sure to keep the barrel steel, rust spot, & steel wool all moist with oil, you don't want to rub it when things are dry. Many years ago we found that Hoppe's #9 nitro powder solvent worked well in place of, or mixed with, oil. The good thing about this is that as long as you use 0000 steel wool & oil you won't hurt anything. If you've caught it in time & there's no pitting, it may clean up so well that it'll look like new.

Remember that both sweat(it's summertime, right?) & blood have salt in them, & both are bad news for blue steel. Good luck, & don't panic. You can do this. 0000 steel wool & light oil, keep things moist with oil & keep rubbing & the rust will come right off.

I agree with unclestu, but I would go by some BlueWonder Gun Cleaner as well. It will take off the rust and leave the blue. I used it with good effect on a rusty Savage model 99 barrel.

What they said. Plus, if it has cut through the blue, try Brownells Oxpho-blue. It's a cold blue you rub on with the 0000 steel wool.

Another option to the steel wool is to soak rust spots as stated above and rub across them with the sides of a round bladed screw driver. The round edges will not scratch the blue but will rub the rust away.

hps

I have read that a simple eraser will remove the rust (so long as it isn't too deep). Then I would recommend Eezox, Corrosion X, or Renaissance wax to protect your gun.

In the auto care section at Walmart there is a silver can with black writing called NEVR-DULL. It's some kind of wadding and you tear off a piece and rub the rust with it, bye bye rust, blue unharmed. This stuff is a gift from above. How it works I have no clue, it works well though.
