Air travel with a gun

So hypothetical…you’ve done everything correctly but your flight is diverted due to weather or other reason and you end up with a layover or overnight in a place that does not have reciprocity to your license or even more ridiculous handgun laws. Would you take possession of your bag or let it go “round and round”.

Low odds of course, but I’m curious how some of you more frequent fliers might manage this. Are there rules in place from some forethought during creation or would this be a total gray area.

I have not had any issues traveling with guns through the airport. they put priorities in you getting your luggage with a firearm. Just imagine the chaos that would happened if a firearm is lost or stolen in a airport. Bring your normal gun that your good with

Direct Flight!

another thing I’m doing is Leaving a Gun in my area I travel to alot. Thanks way, if I’m in a rush, I just GO!

Times have changed. In 1984 I was in the Army Reserve. I joined the rifle team and they sent 10 of us to Ft. Benning for a match. We were to fly in civilian clothes and take our issued match M14's. Two of us didn't have rifle cases. We were told no problem; you can buy them at the Delta counter. So, we walked through the airport in civilian clothes with rifles slung and nobody took a second look. My new Delta case looked like it was years old by the time it got to Georgia. They are rough on them.

Well, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for radically increasing my gun ownership needs and expenses!

Let's see now...family, friends, and business friends in Kentucky, Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Washington, California, Hawaii...and I'm sure I missed a few there.

Let's round that up to an even 20 states, just because. That's at least 20 1911 style handguns (preferred carry) and a selection of suitable hunting rifles. And let's not forget a stash of ammunition in each state.

Next thing you know, we're talking REAL money, here!

Seriously, though...in addition to my own personal fear of losing a firearm while flying (because it's frickin' magic how luggage makes it anywhere in the first place), there's the re-routing fear. I've been rerouted before and I certainly don't want to end up some place where the laws would hang me out to dry over something stupid because I made a mistake in handling/possessing while there.

they won’t lose you gun at the Airport. They track everything with Ai and Machine Learning

If you get diverted to a no go state, DO NOT PICK UP YOUR BAG! Notify the airline and let them deal with it. Picking up the bag subjects you to arrest.

Thank you and this is the answer to my question. There are many posts on how to go about air travel but this is a nuance that I’m interested in hearing about anyones personal experience.. I’d hate to have a family vacation ruined or hung up because of this.

Exactly. I have had many layovers through places like Reagan, JFK, and Newark airports. Hard to get more gun unfriendly than those. Closest I get to my checked bag in those places is I check in at the airline or baggage desk to make sure my bag is either on our next flight out, or locked in an employee office in the event of a delayed/cancelled flight.

A friend of mine got snagged at JFK for exactly that situation - diversion and need to spend the night. It cost him 3 days in jail and about $5k in legal expenses. The problem eventually went away. He didn't get the gun back. His mistake was PICKING UP THE BAG! By the way, Reagan is in Virginia. No problem there. BTDT.
I'm looking at picking up some of the Apple AirTags. Place one in your bag and you know exactly where it is.

Hmmm...just ran across something totally relevant to this suggestion.

Leaving a gun in one's area of travel runs afoul of federal law (the GCA of 1968) if it involves crossing state lines.

This is because the GCA of 68 talks about transfer as POSSESSION, not OWNERSHIP. So giving someone in another state one of your guns to store for you could present a problem legally, depending on how you do this.

Now, if the gun is locked and the person storing it for you does not have possession of the key/combination, that would be an argument against possession, because they don't have access to it for use.

I don't want to hijack this thread away from it's purpose (air travel with firearms), so I'll post a link to a comment which talks about this in another thread:

that’s why you should have guns in different destinations!
