Alabama RKBA Meeting

Several people from the Alabama forums over at OpenCarry.org have expressed a desire to start a pro-RKBA organization in Alabama. To our knowledge, no organization exists currently. While Alabama isn't an extremely anti-gun state, and several pro-gun pieces of legislation have recently been passed, we think more can be done. A local organization could substantially help more pro-gun laws to be passed, and perhaps remove some of the restrictive laws currently in place.

The purpose of this meeting is simply to ascertain how many people are interested, and to come up with a basic structure and goals for an organization.

We are definitely interested in clarifying the legality of unconcealed carry of weapons in this state, but we would like to pursue other issues as well such as vehicle carry and 'shall issue' laws. (Alabama is still 'may issue' and the amount of discretion given to a Sheriff is a topic of much debate...)

If you are interested in coming, please reply in this thread. If you are unsure if you will be able to make it, but would like to come, go ahead and post that you are tentatively coming. I'll try to check on this thread daily and compile a list of people planning to come.

The central thread for this meetup is here, although, I'll try to update both threads when I can. EDIT: Deacon Blues just posted some more detailed instructions (with pictures) on how to reach the location in the oc.org thread.

I'm hoping we can make something of this, and push Alabama off the fence and onto the RKBA side...

Thanks for the interest. We thought B'ham was a good place for a first meeting since it's semi-location-neutral. It's probably a bit far for folks from Mobile and such, but we gotta start somewhere Most likely we will do most planning through a web-site anyways...

keep me up to date on everything - I'm very interested in increasing gun rights in the state. I'd personally like to see a little more reciprocity for ccw permits. thanks for tour work so far.

Right. Well, there was only one other person that said he was coming, and since B'ham was far away (we picked the location because it seemed pretty neutral for people that might want to come), we didn't get together.

There were a handful of people that expressed interest, but couldn't make the meeting. I'm planning on putting together an online meeting through IRC sometime soon. I've just been really, really busy the last couple of days....

I was expecting more interest, but I still think something is doable with the handful we have atm.

There was a bill called HR600 started by one of the Bir'ham representatives. District 53 if I am correct. He wanted to put a $50 tax on handguns that could fire repeatly without taking your finger off the trigger. I think he was targeting autos but the wording also would have included all DA revolvers. It may have been per year too. I do not recall.

Here is what my wife wrote to our Rep.

HR600 is a bad bill. It would place a $50 tax on as simple a device as a double action only five shot revolver. A seven shot semi-auto "Raven" would also be taxed. This bill would hurt women, the poor, and minorities the hardest as many poor buy the $49.95 Raven simply because its all they can afford. It matters little if the words grandfather in pre-existing ownership. Newly separated wifes or girlfriends would be at the mercy of their spouses. Paper Court Orders do not stop drunk men from giving beatings or worse to their ex's.

I used to live in Wisconsin where I was beaten up by five snowmobile riders in 1997. I bought a revolver but soon found out it was unlawful to carry it almost anywhere. I moved to Florida in 1999 and got a five year concealed carry permit after paying $125 and getting finger print cards with months of waiting. In ten years that would equal the cost of the gun. At least I could carry it.



When Eminent Domain Laws threatened our little Florida beachfront cottage, we moved to the Great State of Alabama where we are safe from these Laws. We are now "home". No other State is as free as Alabama in these two respects. There is no where else to go.

If a person inserts the words newspaper, letter, or political ad where the word "gun" is in most gun control bills, it becomes crazy talk. Why not tax free speech? It IS our right given to us by God to protect ourselves!! The founding fathers recognized that right.

Picture a Law that reads "Whereas the Founding Fathers could not have imagined an automatic printing press that can print 600 sheets per minute", a $200 tax stamp will imposed.

If McCain-Feingold was written with a provision that only a person who paid a tax of $50 per newspaper could advertise in the last few days before an election what would happen. This is ten million dollars for a paper of 200,000 circulation. George Soros would write all the last minute political ads. These certainly would not pass a Supreme Court challenge. HR600 is a simply a first step to more gun control.

The right to self-protection is not the only reason for keeping guns. History of guns and war have to be preserved just as much as great works of art. That's another debate.

Don't take my right to have a gun away. The right to have a firearm is just as improtant, if not more, than my right to free speech. Just remember the right to keep and bear arms protects the 1st. ammendment. Both these rights are for the individual.

Yeah, she writes good letters. She worked for the Pro-life candidate who was running against Feingold in 1996. Too bad Feingold broke his own rules and took donated free ads in Madison and Milwaukee at the last wekend.

If you want any other reasons why we are "Wisconsin Escapees", I just saw the Badger football game. The Madison school had a beautiful collage of campus photos with background music and the first words are "University of Wisconsin graduates are the highest number of Peace Corps. volunteers in the Country".

Need I say more?
