Title sums it up, but was the 329PD ever made without the internal lock? I know it can be removed, just curious if it could be avoided all together.

Also I guess along the same lines, are there different "-" versions of the 329PD and are any more desirable than the others?

Sadly, barring some sort of lunchbox gun, all 329s have the wretched lock.

It will be difficult, but sadly the Old Fuff will have to go through life without getting a S&W 329... :D

There is the 329 Night Guard has a steel cylinder and barrel. Been out of production and hard to find as there sought after guns and those that have them generally keep them.
And yes it has the lock as well.

Help me out, folks, I'm new to the world of Smith & Wesson revolvers. What is this "lock" of which you speak, and what does it do?

If you look at the left side of most presently-produced S&W revolvers, there is a little circular hole right over the cylinder release latch. That hole takes a small key which activates an internal lock can disable the gun. Most people seem to dislike them, and I tend to agree. If you want to lock a revolver, just put a cable lock through the frame window.

Anyway, on particularly hard recoiling guns (the 329PD most certainly fits that description) the lock can activate itself and disable the gun. It is pretty rare I think, but it can happen and is somewhat unsettling. There are some kits out there that let you remove the internal lock parts and plug the remaining opening.

It's the loathsome "Hillary Hole".
With the key you can lock the pistol from firing.
Hard to see just above the cylinder release on my 325PD. Tiny hole with arrow to the left.

Understatement Of The Week Award Winner , hands down.
