Wondering if there are bolt action or other alternatives to the dreaded evil AK for 7.62x39? I know that ballistically it is similar to 30-30--but lots of cheap AK rounds.

SKS, Ruger Mini-30, and CZ-527 Carbine are all chambered in it. There is also a mini-mauser bolt action offering from Zastava I believe, but I haven't seen it around much.

The SKS by far would be the most popular and easiest to find of these (both in parts and the firearm itself).

The CZ-527 is the one I wanted, but it is so hard to find, so I settled on a Yugoslavian M59/66A1 (Yugo SKS made by Zastava), tossed on some Tech-Sights, and I love it.

I don't think a Handi-Rifle in 7.62x39mm has been available for years. Rossi made one...mine doesn't work.

The CZ527 has been mentioned.

I have one, it is an excellent rifle. Even with the cheap Russian ammo it shoots close to 1" groups at 100 yds.

The only issue other than the price and availability is the bolt clearance for scopes. I've got a Leupold fixed 4x on mine (great scope for the rifle btw). That is a very compact scope and it doesn't have much clearance at all. I have heard that larger scopes require high rings.

Ruger did a run of the Model 77 bolt action rifle a few years ago. Nice looking firearml but the one I had was a bit lacking in the accuracy department.

I really want a cz527, but as long as my SKS works for deer and hogs, I have trouble justifying the expense when I could save that money for other guns. Someday, though.... someday.

Rossi Used to make a Single shot 7.62x39.
I owned one several years ago but never shot it.
Ended up selling it. I was told they didn't like Military Primers.

I'll put in another for the new model Ruger Mini 30. Think of it as the "everything's better in America" version of the SKS/AK.

My CZ carbine doesn't like Wolf primers either. I reload so it's not a big issue.

Wouldn't mind having a VZ58 at some point, pretty unique action.

It's not just that my Rossi won't shoot military ammo: it won't reliably fire even US commercial loads.

The Yugo M59/66 can be a single shot if the gas valve is shutoff. Mine shoots 1.5 inch groups at 100 yds with Yugo Surplus.

Remington M798 (or maybe it's M799). I owned one for awhile and got rid of it. You can special order one - mine came from Dick's Sporting Goods.

I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye compact and it is a great little rifle. It is extremely accurate as well. I shoot sub moa using Golden Bear ammo 123 gr soft points.

I highly recommend this rifle

I've got a CZ 527 Carbine. A quick look on Gun Broker shows:

Ruger M77
Zastava M85
Remington 799 (a Zastava with Remington marks)

Yes! I liked the power and economy of the x39 round and acknowledged the reliability of the AK, but never favored it. The VZ is fantastic with only aftermarket support holding it back (and it still has that)
