I would like to get some ammo boxes. i hear Dillon and MTM boxes are top notch. Do you guys recommend 100 or 50 round boxes ?

I prefer the 100 round boxes just for increase in capacity. I have a few 50's but don't really use them unless I run out of 100's.

I prefer 50 round boxes. 100 round boxes are too big. Frequently, I do not shoot more than 50 rounds so I then end up with a partial box.

But, no answer is wrong. Get some of both and make your own decision.

Look at Berry Mfg. as well. I do not find any manufacturer's box will survive a drop to the floor when full of ammunition.

I really like the MTMs, both the 50s and 100s, except for those with the handles, they cost a lot more and take up too much space when you're trying to store 'em, particularly when you want to keep them sealed in GI ammo cans.

I've found the Plano ammunition boxes to work great. Especically if you live near an Academy Sports, they ususally have them in store for $4-5 each.

I use both the 50Rd and 100Rd boxes from MTM, Frankford, Plano and Dillon, I find little difference between manufactures. Thus I am only buying the lowest priced ones (Frankford by far). One thing to think about is a couple of 100Rd boxes of 45ACP or 44Mag can get a little heavy.

Great prices. I use 100 round boxes for pistol and 50 round boxes for rifle. I do have a couple 100 rifle boxes if I am going to shoot a match.

I have found that the MTM boxes are stronger and last longer than others. They can usually (though not always) survive being dropped. All others I have used will crack/split.

I buy Berry's boxes by the case, which makes them really cheap. I normally buy 100 round boxes for handgun ammunition, as that's the size that I've found works best for me. For rifle ammunition, other than .223, I buy their 50 round boxes.

Here's the link: http://www.berrysmfg.com/products.aspx?c=3

Orders over $50.00 have free shipping, too. As an example, the 100 round .38/.357 boxes are $1.77 each, delivered, when ordered by the case of 50. They also warrant them for breakage, and will replace them if broken.

Hope this helps.

Seriously, for handgun ammo that you're just going to dump on a bench and load into mags, Tupperware:

That's actually a very good suggestion. Not long ago I started just carrying mine in a bag. Now that I've got into leatherworking, I'm planning on making a few leather pouches for carrying bulk quantities of pistol ammo in. Much more convenient to load from.

Sounds like this is the way to go...;)

Beware verdigris / green slime if you leave ammo in leather bags for any length of time.

rc

I had some brass cases which I left in TWA bag in my basement for 20 years which had the same slime as rc mentions. ( Anyone here remembers TWA ? ;)

I have a bunch of MTM boxes and they work fine. I do like them when shooting semis because I know if I picked up all the brass. But I pretty much stopped using them and just use ziploc bags. Any real storage is done in ammo cans.

I also use the Ziplock storage containers. I buy the store brand from Ingles. I think a pack of 5 cost $2.99. I do have Dillon boxes for load work up, but store bulk in the ZL containers.

I mostly just bag my ammo, anymore. I do like the MTM boxes, though. The ones with molded two-piece hinges. You can separate the top and bottom of the boxes to mix and match colors, and the bottom halves of the pistol cases double as loading blocks for the appropriate sized rifle ammo.

MTM 100

I've seen guys at the range bring their ammo in everything from Pringles potato chip cans to women's hose stockings...whatever works I guess.
