Tested 6 brands so far, 2 show promise, but both are standard velocity that may not carry out to 100Y, or better. My Club is going to be hosting some NRL22 and similar matches, but out to 200Yds.

I ran a swab done the bore (have never brushed a 22LR) between brands and shot 5 off-target, less 1 oopsie, to ‘season’ the barrel to the new lube before shooting for groups. Most are 5-shot groups @ 50-yards, with one 10-shot group from the Aguila ‘blue’ (standard velocity).

I will say I’m pretty impressed with the RPR 22LR for the low co$t entry price.

I was looking closely at the RPR22 and was able to look and shoot one at the match I went to, I liked it and almost ordered one. I will be watching your test since I need to do the same for mine.

Welcome to THR and great thread I will follow with interest.

I would definitely suggest CCI SV for your testing.

While Aguila 40 gr LRN/CPRN did surprisingly well producing 3/4" smaller 10 shot groups at 50 yards and 1.25"-1.5" at 100 yards, CCI SV consistently produced smaller 1/2"-3/4" groups for me at 50 yards - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...22lr-on-the-cheap.898035/page-2#post-12304052

So far RWS Target Rifle ammo has given the best groups in mine. Now that the ammo supply has become better I need to try some other brands in it. CCI-SV did pretty good except for a flier in almost ever group. The rifle has been setting in the safe so long it probably feels abandoned.

Not only are “standard velocity ammo” predominantly used - as if the idea is based on subjective preference - SV ammo has distinct advantages at longer ranges.

The physics around transonic transition are a little counter-intuitive. High velocity ammo will actually have MORE wind drift at long range than will Standard Velocity ammo, and hence has greater sensitivity to wind error. Wind drift is dependent upon loss of velocity during flight, not just dependent upon flight time (which is essentially the critical variable for wind drift comparing either wholly super Sonic or wholly sub-sonic flight), and high velocity 22’s lose a LOT of velocity as they fall from transonic to sub-sonic.

Some guys do shoot high velocity ammo, especially at clubs which only shoot the 100yrd and less provided CoF.

But yeah, SV ammo will make it out past 100yrds. I shoot to 350 on my backyard range a lot with 22 SV ammo. We went out to 500 with another PRS/NRL22 buddy last Saturday before wind got us squirrelly off target on both sides.

Geez, I this is killing me. I've had it in my head that I was going to get a bergara. A few guys at my range got them and put arkens on top of them and what they're doing with CCI SV at 100 was impressive. What I was able to do, without spending significant time on the rifle had me giddy.

Then ... on my last couple of range trips I got to shoot a guy's ruger precision, oh crap!!! Now I'm not so sure.

I can't say that one shot better than the other, but at half the price, the ruger was impressive.

We're trying to get a bergara and a ruger on the line at the same time to shoot some ARA cards in a match simulation. If the ruger can hold its own, it's gonna be like getting a free scope.

The ruger I shot came with a 30 MOA rail too. Regardless of which one edges the other out, the ruger is definitely a good bang for the buck from what I've seen thus far.

As for the ammo, stick with SV. I dont want to argue about what happens when a bullet goes transonic, but i can say that i get better results beyond about 75 yards with SV ammo. SV will get out there. I shoot a lot of CCI SV. It isn't the best, but it's a good bang for the buck. If you're really lucky, your rifle will love it.

Standard velocity is predominantly used for NRL/PRS rimfire, shouldn't be a problem.
Hmmm a RPRR with an Arken SH4 where have I seen that before.View attachment 1158711

That's good to know, thanks!

That's my thinking too! FWIW I have a friend at the range who just sunk a TON (as well into 4-figures!!!) into a custom 22LR of which set him back sooooo much, that I could buy a mint, but used 16' boat with 60hp OB engine on a trailer, with decent electronics ... and yet STILL have the $$$ left over to buy a Ruger Precision Rimfire! It's sooooo durn easy to spend $$ in this game, but I'll gladly shoot in the 'Base' class and shoot against myself, thank you very much!

Oh, and I'll still have a nice boat rig to also use, LOL!

I have a Bergara B14 trainer and a Ruger Precision Rimfire. Both rifles shoot very good and are probably good for most of the rimfire shoots in my area.Neither one is a custom rifle, and as such, they may be limited if they have to go up against some of the incredibly good guns that are being built for the various disciplines that are really getting popular.I've enjoyed a little advantage over some of the younger shooters because I'm a little better at watching the conditions and making the needed adjustments to stay on target.I've been fooling around at shooting long range centerfire and rimfire for a good number of years. My first accurate 22 was a Remington 541S that I bought new in 1980 or 81.Back in those days,we were shooting blackbirds that were coming into the fields of oats.Sometimes the shots went out as far as 150 yards or so.
I got the RPRR about 2 years ago. It's a decent shooting 22 right out of the box,but I didn't like the trigger,so I spent the money and put a two stage Timney in it,which made a world of difference. It actually likes CCI Green Tag better than any of the other ammo I tried in it.With a 6-18 Leupold with a fine crosshair and a .125 dot,it is a great rifle for improvised positions.I don't shoot it well off a front rest and sandbag because of the play in the stock and the pistol grip.I shoot the Bergara very good from the rest and rear bag,and it's a very accurate setup, easily the most intense 22 I've ever had.I put a 2 ounce Shilen trigger and a 12-42 Nightforce scope on it,and it's very consistent. The last 2 50 yard benchrest targets I shot with it were all 10's,but the X count was not the best. The precision 22 games are just getting a toehold in my area, and some very well done rifles are coming out of the WV hills n hollers. At the local public range yesterday, there were Bergaras,Rugers, custom Winchester 52's and even an Anschutz that my buddy's daughter shot for WVU and the Olympic tryouts.I've seen shooting games come and go,but it's been a while since I've seen anything like the precision rimfire shooting take off like it has around here.Vudoos and the slightly lesser bergaras seem to be the most popular.I have worked on many Remington 700's over the years and I like the Bergara because it's close to the 700.
Barrel, trigger, optic, stock and action are where the brush is separated from the timber, but the one big aspect of the rimfire sport is the shooter. The wind and mirage and position are all up to the shooter to get right, and a rifle that may not shoot in the .150's at 50 yards but is still reasonably accurate can be a winner if the operator is on his game.

Every gun is different so what worked for me might not work for you.

I would try SK, Wolf, and Federal 711B. FWIW I was shooting Remington 40X and 60's vintage Anschutz 54 supermatch.

Another RPR shooter here … like others have said I too get my best groups so far with CCI SV but I think they could be better, so I’m following this thread.

I’m also curious about what scopes y’all are using?
Initially I put an old BSA 8-32x50 which I had set on 24x it helped me shoot between heartbeats but I wanted better clarity so I ordered a Leupold Freedom 6-18x40, but I kinda miss the higher magnification.

Quality of glass beats magnification all day long! Like for spotting scopes I still use my old Unertl 24X ones and I can see 22 bullet holes @ 200Y. Not privy to the Freedom model Leupy, still familiar with and use the ol' Vari-X models myself, as least when shooting Leupolds.

My RPR wears an Arken Gen2 SH4 6-24X by 50mm and I run it no higher than 18X. Typically on lower valued scopes it is recommended to run them no higher than 2/3rds max power.

I have decided that Aguila SV and CCI-SV are equal in my 22 rifles but Aguila has disappeared in this area since slojoe took over running our government. Not saying there is a correlation there at all but simply what has happened. There used to be a lot of it but now all you see is small amounts of HV. Also SV 22 ammo is more accurate than HV or at least in all my guns, rifle or handgun.

As to my RPR I settled on RWS Target Rifle ammo as it's best shooting ammo at a happy medium for price. It has disappeared from dealers shelves though and I have never tried any Wolf as there been none available since I have owned the rifle. I hesitate to order ammo because of the shipping costs. 22 ammo is famous for have good lots and not so good lots and I don't want to take a chance on a bum case of higher priced ammo to get free shipping. I will just keep muddling along like I am and shooting what I can find locally. Since I am my only competition I can live with that. I shoot a lot of CCI-SV as I can find it. I stocked up pretty well sometime ago and don't know what the going price is now but it was $4.99 for 50 or 9 bucks for the 100 round pack 100 the last I bought some.

Took my RPRR and 10-22 to the local 100 yard indoor range.
Shooting in no wind is great.
CCI SV and Norma TAC SV have both shot great at 25 yards before but the Norma opened up way more at 50 and 100. Can't be real disappointed though I got it real cheap.
CCI SV performed OK but I mad the mistake of going back and trying some Eley Contact and wow.
This is 50 yards

At 100 I shot the top 5 then adjusted scope and shot lower 5. Apparently the contact has .3 mil less drop at 100 too. 20230821_121232.jpg

Aguila SV and CCI-SV are equal in my 22 rifles but Aguila has disappeared in this area
Aguila 40 gr LRN SV (1130 fps) boxed $275/5000 + free shipping - https://ammobrothers.com/aguila-super-extra-standard-velocity-22-lr-40-grain-solid-point/

Also SV 22 ammo is more accurate than HV or at least in all my guns, rifle or handgun
That's been my experience as well. And definitely boxed over loose bulk packaging.

During 10,000+ round testing, CCI SV outshot everything else consistently producing 1/2"-3/4" 10 shot groups at 50 yards followed closely by Aguila 40 gr LRN SV. Then came Aguila 40 gr CPRN HV at 3/4"-1" 10 shot groups consistently.

Since getting back into rimfire and starting anew with fresh eyes, I don't even use CCI SV any longer. SV isn't cheap like it used to be and for a little more, you can get some good shooting ammunition. Eley Contact and SK Semi Auto are what I use now for semi serious shooting. For plinking I'll get whatever is cheap, although my rifle has a preference for Federal Auto Match.

I can get Aguila SV for < 6-cents a round, CCI SV is 6-cents, but SK Semi-Auto is TWICE the price @ 16-cents! At least for me ...

Not being contentious mind you ... all this just means is that we as shooters have many options to pick from; depending on our use, wallet size and budget :) .

I just did some ammo testing Sunday with my 10/22. Limited tests and sample size I fired eight five round groups @50 yards. I used CCI-SB, Eley Target, and Eley Club.
I have some Aguila-SV but ran out of time. Out of the 3 I tried the CCI-SV yielded average group size of .49, with the Eley Club close behind at .52. Eley Target was .62 average. I feel I could have done slightly better on a couple groups if I were a better shot :) All in all not bad for an old guy with glasses :) I did run 5 shots of each to season before measuring for groups. So far CCI seems as consistent as any and good for the price. I'll try the Aguila next time out and I'd like to try Eley Club. Anything higher end is mail order only around here. I probably would not buy any more of the Target, but would purchase Club again.
