Ammo brand testing new Ruger Precision Rimfire

If anyone wants budget ammo that shoots decent groups this is probably your best bet right now.

I have a box on the table right now. That's 34 per box, plus Shipping, though I think they have free shipping for members. If anyone lives near a fleet farm, I picked mine up for 30 a box.

More testing @ 50-yards today ... as the Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity printed well again today too! Next up ... the Aguila SE SV vs. the CCI SV @ 100-yards ... will post someday in this RPR thread.

I love Aguila, it has proven to be the most consistent non-match priced ammo for me. WITH THAT SAID, get some newer production Aguila SV. What you have there is "Eley primed", newer stuff will be "Aguila Primed." Almost as consistent, defnitely shoots "different." It doesn't have the odd smell the Eley does either.

A buddy of mine has had very good luck with Norma Tac 22 in his RPR.

I was going through the big cardboard box that has been relegated to holding all of the .22lr ammo I've been trying and it seems that Eley Contact is the best bang for the buck at ~$5 a box. Second in line for best bang for the buck is SK Semi Auto at ~$6 - $7 a box. This stuff shoots consistent bug holes for me and consistently gets me 3600 - 3800 out of 4000 on a benchrest rimfire card.

Tac22 shoots very well in my Bergara, right about .5" at 50 consistently with a decent SD of 10. I've bot a couple bricks of it and use it as my practice ammo, does pretty well out to 300yds.

Man, it looks like you're getting good results. I wish I was lucky with ammo that is readily available. Maybe you got ahold of a particularly good lot.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of!

I do have an EC Tuner being delivered on Monday. I think that I can use that to tweak the groups a little of the rounds that I find are at least consistent velocity wise in order to "get by".

Some rifles don't shoot target ammo much if any better than standard ammo because they don't have tight match chambers and possibly as good a barrel. You have to experiment to find out.

This is definitely true.

I have a Bore Buddy 21" barrel with 1-12 twist and Bentz chamber on its way to me. I can't wait to see how it does and compare it to the 16" heavy profile CMMG barrel I have. The CMMG barrel does quite ell with CCI SV at 50 yards.

I know what you mean. When experimenting with this new rifle looking for a good cheap ammo, I was ordering the same ammo from multiple vendors figuring they'd be different lots and my plan was to re order from the vendor that sold me the best shooting lot. I guess it worked out. I found a really good lot of Federal Auto Match and SK Semi Auto.

We have a .22 KYL match at the club once a month and that last swinger is 1/4" wide at 50yds. This is the second year of it and haven't joined in yet but always go to hang out and watch.

I have noticed that most guys that are regularly involved almost immediately made some major improvments in rifles and optics. The playing field is leveling out quickly!

I did the same with Norma, but when I found a great lot of Lapua and ordered a brick, a long came a new lot... So I guess I'll see.

I don't know if anyplace will do this anymore but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Several years ago I made an aquaintance who had belonged to a local gun club as an adolescent. He shared that he had won state NRA 1600 small bore prone and had his Winchester 52D up in the attic. My brother was trying to get me to join the same club and shoot 2700 bullseye handgun matches. But instead of a handgun, my brother calls and say's "come get your Remington 40X and bring this much cash". So Rick and I joined and now needed ammo.

Rick and I contacted some of the places that catered to shooter's of such matches. We wanted to buy several a mixed brick of different brands/lots and see if we could find one that worked good in both our guns. We only wanted them to send brands/lot numbers that they could promise us ten bricks of, if we found something that worked. We found someone willing (and they even suggested some brands/lines we hadn't considered putting on the list).

Places like Killough and Good Shooting list ammo by lot number, but they only do it for the high end ammo. If there's a place that does it with middle of the road ammo, I sure would like to know. Being able to pick and choose SK Semi Auto or Eley Contact would make my year.

Buy some good ammo so that you can see how good the gun is. CCI SV is pretty good bang for the buck, as is Norma TAC, but I'd try some Eley, Lapua, RWS and SK.

Geez, I this is killing me. I've had it in my head that I was going to get a bergara. A few guys at my range got them and put arkens on top of them and what they're doing with CCI SV at 100 was impressive. What I was able to do, without spending significant time on the rifle had me giddy.

Then ... on my last couple of range trips I got to shoot a guy's ruger precision, oh crap!!! Now I'm not so sure.

I can't say that one shot better than the other, but at half the price, the ruger was impressive.

We're trying to get a bergara and a ruger on the line at the same time to shoot some ARA cards in a match simulation. If the ruger can hold its own, it's gonna be like getting a free scope.

The ruger I shot came with a 30 MOA rail too. Regardless of which one edges the other out, the ruger is definitely a good bang for the buck from what I've seen thus far.

As for the ammo, stick with SV. I dont want to argue about what happens when a bullet goes transonic, but i can say that i get better results beyond about 75 yards with SV ammo. SV will get out there. I shoot a lot of CCI SV. It isn't the best, but it's a good bang for the buck. If you're really lucky, your rifle will love it.
I'd go with the Ruger.

Too late. I already got a CZ.

I was gonna test my Savage today at the 25 yard indoor range today, but the Ruger was already out. Have to look pretty close to see what it likes better at 25 but the stuff it don't like is really apparent lol.View attachment 1169458View attachment 1169459
Yeah, you can do some weeding and save yourself some walking at 25. I do that too when I'm testing a bunch if different ammo.

Shoot at 100 yards and you will do a lot less weeding.

Based on my experience, if you care about groups, minimum is Federal 711B, SK , or Wolf. Haven't shot the Norma, and needless to say, upper end Ely and Lapua will be better.
