Ammo Coming Back!

.223 is pretty pricey in Maine these days. But it is available, for those who want it. I got into the AR game middle of last year. Hadn't piled up the ammo. Now I'm paying, a little. But I have feelers out, and pick up everyone's old ammo for peanuts when I can.

Just sold off my 223 ammo. Almost all Wolf 55gr and some Silver Bear 62gr. All in all nearly 1600 rounds. Some in factory boxes and some loose in a bag. Sold the whole mess for twenty five cents a round and glad to get rid of it. No more tiny toy bullets for me. 7.5X55, 7.62X51, 45/70 or it ain't a rifle. I've got one more .223 carbine to sell but I'll wait a while to see if there's a new ban. If so it will just go up in value and I'm in no hurry to unload it. Took it out of my safe to make room for my new 7.62X51 bolt gun and have it stored in a gun bag. The gun show last weekend in Roseburg had tons of ammo for sale, all overpriced. :D

Let me know when WWB is $11 a box again...........

I absolutely refuse to pay double the price for ammo from the amount it was just 2-3 years ago.

You might be a one-man protest. Even if prices do come down a bit, I don't think you're going to see prices roll back to '05 prices.

On the other hand, I'd love to be wrong on that one. :D

Been checking the local wal-marts if I am close to one. the last two months ammo at wal-mart here ammo in 9mm, 45acp and 38 has been had to find. Did pick up 3 boxes of the wwb 9mm in the 100 pack for like $18.97 plus tax each. Stopped by to get some pet food at another one today and they had a few boxes of blazer brass 9mm for $8.97 each. They only had 15 boxes left so thats all I bought.

Have been looking for some 45 acp but have not seen any in the last month or so at wal mart.
did spend over 4K on ammo the weekend before last. it was a mix of different calibers but did get like 11k rounds of 7.62 x 39 for $220 to $260 a case. Traded most of it off for cases of other ammo

While some of you guys buy all the ammo at Walmart, I've noticed a bunch of other ammo coming out of the woodwork.

Just yesterday I picked up a pile of surplus .45ACP, some date-stamped from WWII, some from Vietnam, at a pawn shop. The other week I found a huge quantitiy of Vietnam-era surplus .30-'06 at another shop which looked like it came off machinegun belts. I just had to get a box. Finally, there's all these "new" brands I've never seen before. "Brown Bear", for example.

I haven't checked local prices lately.

But a couple days ago I noticed Natchez had Fed AE 9mm on sale for 9.99. Less than 10? I had to buy some. :)

Today I noticed the sporting goods associate at the local Wal-Mart both stocking ammunition in the cabinet and ordering ammunition with one of those electronic gun thingys. Hopefully the trend will continue.

Wolf 7.62x39 is still very hard to find, and when you do, its $300/case.:barf: I'm very happy I bought 3 cases at $175/case, 2 years ago.:)

I've read somewhere that 45 acp WWII ammo was of two varieties, one for the 1911 pistols and the other was for the Thompson submachine gun, the latter is more powerful and can cause damage to 1911 pistols. The .45 acp WWII casings I've seen were plated steel.

The same could be true (pressure wise) for 30-06 cartridges for the Garands vs those for the Browning 30 cal machine guns. Machine guns were built heavier and more robust than garands.

tanners was where I bought it.
I will tell you where I got it. bought like 5 or 6 cases from 10x of wolf. I believe they sold out and left in the early afternoon sat and could of been back home in la by super bowl time if they wanted to. they seem to come to most of the shows at tanners. i think you can ask them to bring a few cases ahead of time i believe if you have there number. it was $220 for everyone. bought 3 cases from the guy by the back door from leadville for $260 each. one wolf and two cases of the hot shot.

bought 2 cases for $250 each along with a case of 9x18 and some other stuff like 5.7x28 oh around 700 or so and alot of norinco 9mm from some dealer I did not know. bought everything he had as far as ammo on his table and he gave me a good deal. also 1 case that was wolf hp with a few of the boxes that were opened and on strippers. also got 500 rounds each of hornady and agilla 17 mach2 for $30 a case of 500 from a young guy by the back toward the food area on the south side row S I believe. he had a nice les baer 45 but I did not have enough left for it. dang!
Get there early and I like to start toward the rear or at least in the middle as most of the dealers it seams up front are at most every show and more of the new guys that have deals are back by the beenie babys and trinkets it seems sometimes, LOL

must be nice I went to 3 wally worlds here in Ft. Worth and couldnt find 1 box of anything except for 1 box of .32 auto so no help there. I finally ended up going to Cabela's and found the last 2 box's of .45's. Its been slim pickins here lately

It's about time. I moved to the San Anton area back in September, and the local walmart has been sold out of 9mm since then. Hopefully they'll start getting some supply in.

I must assume you are a handloader for your plinking needs and bought sufficient self defense ammo 2-3 years ago to last you the rest of your life. If so cool. If not, I suggest you start buying ammo now. It ain't gonna get any cheaper my friend.

can not speak for the ww2 ammo but if it was different it would be marked as such on the boxes. the 30-06 that was the m2 ball is made for anything I believe. the 60's and 70's lake city ammo was used in both the garands and machine guns no difference.

The cmp a few years ago paid Talon while they were still in bussiness to break down machine gun belts of us issue 30-06 lc marked. they boxed all the non tracer rounds in brown boxes of 20 rounds with cmp on front of the box in big print. it said packaged by Talon on one side or the end of the box. they sold out of it that way about 4 years ago.

If you still want cheap 30-06 better get on the band wagon soon as the cmp is like around 2 months behind on shipping. If i remember right you can get a sealed can of 240 rounds in 20 round boxes of greek for $70 and a can of 192 rounds for $60. The 192 round spam can had 4 bandolers of 48 rounds on 6 eight round clips. around $10 a can shipped I think.
wait till its gone and you may think 75 cents to a $1 a round for 223 is cheap.

It ain't gonna get any cheaper my friend.-model of 1905

Maybe so, but tell that to the guys I sold the dozen+ used Glock 19 mags for $75 each 2 weeks before the assualt weapons ban expired a few years back.... :neener:

Metal prices have fallen tremendously in the last 6 months (though I understand that it does take a long time for that to work through the system for various reasons), and I'm betting the "Obama panic" won't last forever.

Maybe it's being an optimist, or maybe it's the 3,000 40 S/W cases sitting under my deask, but I'm betting on cheaper ammo in six months.

Fortunately I reload my pistol calibers, 38 spl, 357 mag, and 40 S&W. I have plenty of ammo for those calibers. 7.62x39 is my achilles heel, I rely on factory ammo, but I have a stockpile, so I'm not worried right now.

Whenever I stop by Wallyville of late, I'll ask the salesperson to check the list to see what they have coming in on the truck that day. They keep "the list" right next to the cash register, so it's not like a big deal for them to look it over and see what is coming in.

Today they got in a bunch of Federal Value Packed .223, .45ACP, .22LR VP's, .40S&W and a bunch of other Fudd rounds. While I didn't see any 9mm sitting in the display, I asked if they would look in the locked drawer over in the corner. Sure enough they had one box that got "misplaced." So, I had to snag it... :)

A fella showed up at my range today with several boxes of 9mm Monarch Brass. It's not in a green box anymore, it's in a red box. A few months ago, it was 8.99 a box. Now it is around 10.99 a box.

I only see this brand sold at Academy. I'm really glad it's back around, because the only other option is Winchester white box (when it's available), at about 13.99 per box.

There is absolutely no shortage of brass. I'm convinced that ammo companies are holding back on their supply to increase demand.

I wish some newer ammo companies would come around and give these guys a run for their money. It's obvious that the raw materials are incredulously cheap compared to the retail price.

All of the .45acp at the wal marts in Corpus Christi, tx had jumped up to $23 for 50 rounds, IF they even had any in stock.
So when I went to the wal mart in Kingsville, and found 4 boxes of Blazer Brass for $16, I bought all four boxes they had there.

It's actually really nice looking ammo.

I hope they have more when I go back next week.

The gun and ammo dealers love the craze going on. It makes for good business.
