An 18 dollar 3-9x40AO scope....gotta be crap right?

Day 1
It dumped last night, and again this morning.

I set the turrets on the side like that, it actually came right side up, tho not even close to level.

Again junk focus on the photos, but so far zero issues with the scope. Ring screws are rusting tho.
looks clear. today i have had 3rd Simmons scopes die in my hands. i mounted a 8 point 3x9 today for a customer. did the normal go around tightened it up nice and snug go to check the eye box on 9 power and the cross hairs turn about 45 degrees when the power ring moves.

The old 8points we're solid if unimpressive, the newer ones I've seen have all been pretty crappy.

I used to really like Simmons scopes, but I generally avoid the new ones, even the new variants of the good ones.

Ok, 1, outstanding photgraphy--it's a real pain to get good photos through a scope that turn out that well.

2., Question, the front bell markings look like photo lens markings--what does the manual tell you hose are?

3. "Walking" that through a 20 click box is pretty amazing. Usually, cheap scopes don't "like" making that many clicks without the detent being fuzzy, or bending out of the way or otherwise becoming toast. (Curiosity: Are the clicks defined, 1/4", MOA, or some value?)

You may consider running the same tests later on with stainless ring screws. Could be an interesting control variable.
That would be a good test. I may try that with those rings on one of my better scopes
I've replaced the crappy soft screws most Chinese mounts come with, using stainless fasteners, but I've never documented how they affect anything besides not snapping off.

Thanks I've taken alot of pictures thru optics of one sort or another, and your right rarely do they come out decently.

The markings on the objective bell are yardage marks. The scope is theoretically focused at that range when the marks align with the indicator dot.....so basically the same thing as an adjustable focus camera lenses. On even expensive scopes it's not horribly unusual for the yardage marks to be a little off. Which is why it surprised me that this thing was so close.

Clicks are marked at 1/4". Tracking also surprised me as well. I honestly expected it to fail miserably, but even with the one shot where the erector stuck, it adjust pretty close when it came loose.

The beautiful thing about capitalism, competition, industry, and technology advancement is that better and better toys are becoming cheaper and cheaper. Imagine telling someone in 1980 you could get a sub-MOA gun for $380 ($125 in that day's money) or a halfway decent scope for $18 ($6 in that day's money). I love America.

Yeah, the infinity (∞) mark looked lifted right off a camera lens (there's probably a hidden mallninja trope hidden right there [:)]).

At the price, torture testing makes a lot of sense.

Mind, this does raise the question of "Why don't $100 scopes do at least this well?"

For reference I'm setting the scope so that light dosent hit the lenses directly. That ruins coatings faster than anything besides dirty t-shirts I think.
I had an old leupy go from fine to unusable in one week of sitting with the occular facing the sun.
It's also rough on badly finished anodizing, so the scopes got the same side aligned with the sun for the first 1/2 of the day all the time. It should show some fadding if it sits there long enough, and sooner rather than later if the ano color isn't well fixed.

Cancel that, mount was processed thru the Honolulu USPS distribution today. I should be picking it up tomorrow, so mid week should be able to test it.

nice should put it in the freezer and check the seals
Tossed it in the freezer for 20mins....

To be fair when it came out the interior was clear but the exterior was fogged solid. It wasn't untill It sat on the counter for a few mins in this 80° heat that it fogged internally. I'm betting the seals are fine and there was moisture in there from assembly.

Its back outside again, I'll grab a few more pictures in a 1/2 hour or so.

Not a scope I'd recommend for cold weather use.

this is why i leave my gun in the truck the night before. most scopes will fog in the cold but when the get to air temp the fog goes away. i think we found a name for this scope unicorn magic lol. i would like to see how long the fog goes away when its in the freezer like going from your cold house to the wood. how long before u could shoot. i have a 10 min drive to were i hunt it can be zero out and i don't put the heat on. this is doing good for the money. but if u have 10 of them will they all be the same. thats the bad thing about cheap scopes u may get one tats real good but other people wont.

Thought y'all might like that.

have u seen how much adjustment there is in the turrets.
That might be stressing the internals more than I dare before shooting it lol.

I've also seen scopes fog up after being pulled from an AC car, letting them sit for 15-20mins usually clears them up no problem. I've spent quite a bit of time in an analytical lab, and getting moisture out of samples can be a trying issue even with best quality equipment.

The condensation in the scope seems to have gone away and left no residue.
Guess it's hotter than I thought, the scope is still cool to the touch.
I mentioned to get to it faster but I was chasing kids.

I think your right about getting a good one vs getting a bad one. These might generally be pretty good, but my sample size is 1, that isn't much of an average.
