So as to not hi-jack the other BPCDay thread I figured I should start my own. Don't have any pictures as neither the smokeless shooter I was with nor myself have smart phones to take pictures with. However this is the gun I was shooting:

It's a late production (US made parts) 4-3/4" USFA Single Action with their black powder frame. And the load was 35-36 grains of OE FFFg topped by a 253g Big Lube (SPG) 45 Colt bullet.

Temperatures around Noon when I got there were about 100 degrees, headed for 104 by mid afternoon. Couple that with the very dry conditions in Central Arizona and it made for a challenge shooting black powder. But...because I was shooting Big Lube bullets loaded with SPG I experienced no fouling issues throughout the time I was there. The cylinder continued to turn smoothly and freely the whole time.

I was shooting at a cardboard silhouette @ 8 yards and a 10" steel plate at 10-12 yards. My first five on the plate were all hits so I started off feeling good. I tried several cylinders point shooting (never my strong suit) at the cardboard and although I hit it every time nothing could have been called a group. Went back to the steel gong and enjoyed myself, only missing when I lost trigger control for a moment. There is something about firing a single action loaded with a stout charge of black powder and feeling the not insubstantial recoil, seeing the billowing cloud of smoke, and hearing the satisfying clang when you hit steel.

After 35 or 40 rounds I started missing more because my bad back was starting to yell at me. I sat down to give my friend a turn while he shot his 1911 45 ACP. After several magazines he asked me if I was going to shoot again and I said, "One more cylinder." I loaded up and fired 5 very deliberate shots, one handed of course. It's the only way to shoot BP cartridge handguns (smile). I got all five on the head of the cardboard target, a square 6X6". Four of the shots were inside of the IDPA 4" center with one just outside. Feeling I had vindicated myself...a little, I called it a day.

Dave T, every time I shoot my black powder loads during the heat of the summer I notice the barrel fouling is always harder and I'm sure less moist. The humidity can be quite high here but that doesn't seem to help keep the fouling moist when temperatures are 90s+. Since you are in AZ I imagine the lack of humidity is worse. Anyway, nice gun you have there and I can attest to the recoil factor of your load. Last year at a Cowboy shoot we had to shoot one stage seated inside an "outhouse" with no windows. I was using an identical load in 45 Colt and after 10 fast rounds from my pistols I started wishing I had brought my 38 LC conversions!

John,

At Rio Salado Sportsman's Club in Usery Mountain Park. When I can get one I shoot on the Pistol Bays. It's like having your own small range. They are a "first come, first served" kind of deal but in the hot weather I can usually get an open bay in the middle of a week day. Wait till mid afternoon and you can take your pick...if you can stand the heat. (smile)

you know, I’ve been a member there for probably 10 years. Can a regular member just use the pistol bays? So far all I do is use the public range. There the closest one can place a target is 11 yards.

I don’t belong to any of the clubs there so I assumed I was limited to the public range. I guess I should probably ask what my privileges are.

I’ve a number of the Italian made Colt and Remington percussion revolvers, while I do enjoy weekly outings with them as cap and ball, several have conversion cylinders in 45C. Loaded with a brimful charge of 3F bp and 200 or 250 grain bullets they do indeed breathe fire and smoke. I’ve been a member of a private membership club for 40 years now.

There’s nothing as elegant as a blue finish SAA with a ivory grip on it.

John,

You get access to the pistol bays by being a competitive shooter in one of the practical pistol disciplines (I shot in three of them back when I joined Rio in '04). You can also shoot on the bays as a guest of someone authorized to use them. I've had a number of friends there as my guests, introducing them to practical/defensive shooting in the old days and black powder cartridge shooting today.

If you'd like to try something like that PM me and we might be able to set something up.

I've shot a lot of blackpowder cartridge in SASS mostly with 44 special or Russian loads. But sometimes with my USFA Rodeo 45 Colt.. the same 250gr Big Lube bullets in the 45. I've used a lot of Schuetzen, Goex and Kik blacp powder. Occasionally I load some Swiss to get the full experience. Love itn
