Okay, so in a Wyoming elk unit such as 37, there is a general elk season in which both bulls and cows can be legally taken that runs from Oct 15 to Nov 5. But there is also a cow and calf season that runs from Sep 1 to Sep 30, and a season that runs from Oct 1 to Dec 21 in which "unused" type 6 licenses from the previous cow and calf season are valid. What I want to know is by "unused" do they mean tags for that season drawn by hunters which were not filled, or something else? And am I allowed to apply for both the General elk season and cow and calf season? Yes I know these are rookie questions, but when it comes to Wyoming elk hunting and applying for tags I am entirely a rookie and just want to make sure I get everything clear.

At the risk of suggesting the obvious, perhaps just give the good folks at WY Game & Fish a call?

I've found them to be very helpful when I've had questions.

Area 37 is divided into 2 sub areas for bow season, tag types 6 and 9 north or south of Wolf Creek trail within the Nation Forest boundary. Type 6 is cow/calf only, type 9 is any elk. From Oct. 1st till Dec. 21st they are valid in the entire area. Rifle season starts Oct. 15th and lasts till Nov. 5th. After Nov. 5th the tags are all cow/calf. as no bulls may be taken after that date. You should still call GAF, and confirm this. They are the ones who make the rules and can clarify. Area 36 is also General, so you have a large area to hunt if you buy a general for rifle season. Just keep in mind that these areas have some limited access, depending on where you plan to try your luck. 36 more so than the surrounding areas.

You're a glutton for punishment if you choose to hunt area 37 during rifle season, especially without knowing the area. Endless vast timber diminishes your glassing ability. The majority of the herd will be on private land by rifle season as well. Area 36 is similar. Bow season often provides good hunting, but rifle season is summed up by low success rates and few trophy bulls. I couldn't draw a 38 tag if my life depended on it (sore subject), so I have plenty of experience in general area 37. Given that, I have had success there.

Yes what you are referring to with the type 6 permits issued for the September season, anybody that did not fill their tag for that season, then their license will still be valid for the later season.
Nice thing about type 6 ,reduced price tags, you can get one of those for one area, and still get a general or type 1 for a different area.
