I searched the forums for a few weeks and couldn't get a good answer for specifics. I want a .308 bolt action because I don't have that niche filled. I have a Remington pump 30.06, a 7.62x39 AR, a .300 BLK AR and a .308 Cetme. They all have regular single stage triggers and I'm ok with that. I am looking at a Savage 11 Hunter XP for $395 it has a regular trigger and stock and Bushnell scope, a Savage 11 Trophy Hunter XP for$482 it was $458 a week or so ago it has an accutrigger and a Nikon scope and a Savage FCNS for $559 it has accutrigger and accustock but no scope. Or I can get a Marlin X7 for $368 fancy trigger and no scope. I'm ok with a regular trigger as long as it is fairly decent. I hope I covered every thing. For can busting and any deer or varmint that gets close enough to my house from the river.

I've got the Savage 111 FCNS in .30-06 and would definitely recommend the gun, even if a different caliber. The accutrigger is awesome. I mounted a Leupold VX-1 3-9 on it with Leupold rings and can drill Gatorade bottles at 175 offhand. Gun is solid, finish looks good. I may be adding one in .243 before the end of the year.

Personally, I consider the Accutrigger one of the great advantages of Savage rifles, so unless you need to count every dollar I would only consider the Savage rifles that have one.

Of the guns you listed, I would probably go with the Savage 11 Trophy Hunter. That sounds like a good price for that gun with a Nikon scope. I'm not sure the FCNS is worth $80 more, plus the cost of a decent scope. I don't have any first hand experience with Marlin bolt-action rifles, but if you do have to watch your dollars, the X7 is a popular choice and seems to get a lot of positive feedback.

The Nikon scope is better than the Bushnell. I've never shot one with the accustock, but they are supposed to be better than the standard Tupperware stock.

I have one of the standard trigger 11 XP that came with a Bushnell scope. I like the standard trigger. I have not seen a need to adjust it as yet, but do have the instructions for doing so. The Bushnell scope had point of impact shifts with changes in magnification that I decided were unacceptable, and removed it. The rifle has since worn a Nikon that I liked quite well, and now wears a Burris Fullfield II with the BDC reticle. I like the Burris very much, and recommend it to anyone who wants a good scope for ~$200 or less.

I found a wood stock Savage 110 THXP for $60 more than the plastic stock Savage 111 THXP. Is wood worth the extra money? I see a lot of negative comments about the plastic stock.

I have both the wood and synthetic Savages and they shoot equally well. I think it is personal taste as to which to get. For me it is the barrel and action as well as trigger that makes the difference. I am a BIG fan of the Accutrigger so I would suggest getting that.

That's about it.
