One of the biggest herds I think I've ever seen. if you are reading this then this should be on the list of your hunting sites.

That's really nice. I used to see groups similar to that between Prescott and Chino Valley, though not anymore. I've been told that the wildlife service rounded them up and relocated them-- imagine having that job.

Great pic!!! Is that the Arapaho Refuge?

That's not generally where they are during the season and, sadly, they're well dispersed come hunting time, but that is a fantastic picture. Thanks for sharing it!

I've seen many thousands of antelope in my lifetime, but I don't think I've ever seen a herd that size. Totally amazing ! Someone isn't feeding them nearby are they?

I think that may be the Arapaho Wildlife Refuge outside Walden, in which case there may be feed?

Hunting "Praririe Goats" is a rifleman's sport. Back in days gone by we were allowed one Buck. The doe and fawn tags were unlimited. Even cotton tail rabbits were limited to 8 per day. The extra tags sold for $1.50 each.

DS, a group of five of us went to new castle to hunt prong horn starting on oct 1st.and boy was it different, the trailer next to out sportsman caught fire at 3 AM sat morning and jumped to our trailer. the bad, we lost the trailer and most of our bedding and cloths. the good, no one was hurt and we saved our guns and other gear. the new castle fire dept was fantastic as was the people at the fountion motel-hotel, as a matter of fact so was all the people we interacted with durning our stay. as we had driven 33 hours to get there and we were all ok, we went hunting sat. morning and we all tagged out by monday, we got a u-haul trailed and left monday night for home. eastbank.

I don't know what the difference is but it might take 8-10 years to draw a Colorado tag along the Wyoming border.
9 yrs was my last one. Back 20 yrs or so i drew a non res by Riverton first try.

Now that is some story. Weston County is 400 miles North East of me. I would have recommended another area had we hooked up earlier. The Trophy areas are harder for an NR to draw. That said, Migratory areas are larger and more isolated. We used to only shoot the 15" to 16" Goats. It seems now days guides charge a Trophy fee for the 14" critters ? We have one the wife took on the Powder River in 1974. It was 17" and 9.5" at the base. It missed the book by 1 1/4 points. It has shrunk some over the years.

I read your original story on that hunt but I don't remember you saying fountain inn!!! I used to base there when I was driving truck, and one of my old teacher's daughter in law works as a manager there. They really are a great crowd!

The "Goats" migrate from the Wyoming Red Desert to Colorado in the Winter. They migrate between both states during the hunting seasons. They are neat creatures that have survived for a million years. Nice picture.
A LOT of those eastern herds migrate over here to our alfalfa fields to create super herds, I can't remember how many times I've stopped counting after 200 when watching the winter herds on a pivot circle, ripping up bales and bouncing from field to field, one year, we had over 500 in a 5 mile radius on about 7 fields. One neighbor sells high $$$$$$ alfalfa to the dairies in Colorado so they are ALWAYS welcoming antelope hunters, but even our late season only allows about 35 tags.

We like to quote "We have more Prairie Goats than people. Then someone screams that is not true. Wyoming has years of changing populations in game and people. We are currently have a declining population of people. This has been going down for 8 years. The Winter kill of Antelope and deer will be very high this year.
If you are planing a hunt in our state for the 2017 season check the forecast by area very close.
