In a Los Angeles coffin.
I'll be visiting WA state, specifically the city of Port Townsend and I'll be all over the state on vacation.

From the NRA site, all I found was this:
Port Townsend - Jefferson County Sportsmen's Association, Gun Club Road, Port Townsend, WA 98368.
Phone: 360-385-3652
Facilities include: Outdoor Pistol (Var. to 50 Yds.), Outdoor Rifle (100 w/ 200 & 300 Yd. Pts.), Muzzleloading, Trap, Archery
Range Access: Private
Web Site: www.jeffersoncountysportsmen.org
What do you guys think of this range?

Anyways...I don't want to limit myself, and wondering what my fellow WA shooters recommend to do for a shooter like me. I'm open for some self defense classes, gun shows (in the month of October) or just BS at the range.

Thanks!

I'll be watching this thread as well. I'm very seriously considering a move to the Seattle area (or “Pugetropolis” as another THR member called it) as soon as next month. Looks like Port Townsend is about 30 -40 miles from the east side where I'm going but that might be worth the drive for a 300 yard rifle range.

Best guns shows on the wet side of the mountains are those by the WA Arms Collectors. Open to all, but you have to be a member to buy or sell a firearm.

The Monroe site is east of Everett, convenient to coming across Puget Sound by ferry. The Puyallup site is just east of Tacoma, convenient to driving around the south of the Sound. There is a show at each place in October.

There is a show in Spokane on the last day of October, and it is not in any way convenient to the Sound :D

And there is a show on Oct. 25 & 26 at the fairgrounds in Kennewick (one of the Tri-Cities). Hey, I've never gone to that one and my Dad lives there! A plan is forming as I type.....

I know there are some others in Bellingham or Mount Vernon but you can look for those.

As for shooting ranges, there have been a few good threads here in the last year or two on that very subject. Just search a little, using Seattle or Pacific Northwest as key words. Maybe Bellevue was in the original title of one, I can't remember. I 'spect others will chime in on this.

Thanks for your help friends. As I look at our time share in the area, Port Townsend looks beautiful.

Trend west eh... you'll like the place. I live down in the southern part of the state. Shout out when you're comin' through maybe we can hit the range.

I have the same question..... I just moved to the olympia/tacoma area and have found no good all inclusice ranges.... I am very diasapointed. i'm looking for a good place to shoot pistol... maybe i just haven't found it yet but here it is....

these are indoor, as i was trying to find someplace to shoot year round with the rain.

Tacoma:
Bulls Eye Indoor Range LLC= crowded and not much space. hard to pick up your brass

Puyallup:
The Marksman = No lead :cuss: and sorta a safty nazi. But my favorite other wize.

now i need to search for outdoor but..... Anyone have ideas?

Where do you shoot your pistols?

Wilburt, I'm up in Everett, so I don't get down your way very often, but as far as outdoor ranges go there's one in Tacoma called Paul Bunyan you may want to check out. I've also shot at one at Ravensdale on the Kent-Kangley Rd.

CG, most of Port Townsend looks nothing like those new condos. The place is a dump. It's like somebody took a nineteenth-century, Victorian village, pulled the financial rug out from under it, and left it in a time bubble until the present day. Most of the houses are over 100 years old!

Sure, you've got the jazz festival, funky art stores, parks, water on three sides, and the Olympic mountains nearby, if you're into that sort of thing. The two movie theaters, one is a converted Oddfellows ballroom, still serve heart-attack buttered popcorn, and have more presence than the movies they show.

I'd stay away if I were you. :D

I've only found one public range here in Oak Harbor, across the ferry from Port Townsend. There's actually three here but the other two are private clubs.
Here's the listing that the NRA gives for WA: http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/findlocal.asp?State=WA

It's missing one of Oak Harbor's so I'm sure it's not a complete area listing. Although they list one in Port Townsend (Jefferson County Sportsmen's Association--private), and several in Port Angeles.

Good luck!

Wilburt -

Capital City Rifle and Pistol Club

http://www.ccrpclub.org/

is just south of Olympia and is an excellent private range. They have multiple ranges, including an "action pistol range", used for defensive pistol and cowboy action shooting. Longest range is 200 yd rifle range, which has targets at 50, 100 and 200. This one is covered, so at least you don't drown while shooting.

Fees aren't bad, there's a locked gate and the members are serious about safety.

I recommend it without reservations, unless you are looking for some place to shoot bottles with an AK. So far there doesn't seem to be any interest in that end of the shooting sports at this range ... :)

If you decide to get over to the East side, drop me a line. I am a club member at the Ephrata range and there is open land here for plinking.

It's little known, but the Fort Lewis POW (privately owned weapon, in Army-speak) range is open to the public, but it's only open on weekends an possibly Fridays.

You can get there by taking East Gate Rd from SR 507.

It handles rifle and pistol, and you can shoot out to 300 yards.

Oh, it does sometimes close on weekends during hunting season, when the impact area is opened for hunting.

thanks all.... hey Langenator.. Could you give me a bit more info on the ft lewis range? Any class you have to take, check in at range control, crowded, etc

oh and Dmazur. i emailed the people over at CCRP and they said some confusing stuff.... Do you get to keep your brass? I think i'm going to head down that way when they have their next orientation.

Last summer I spent some time on the east side shooting at the rattlesnake range. they have separate ranges for 1000 yd, covered 100 yde range, cowbow action, black powder, ispc, trap ranges. it's a bit of a drive but a very nice range.

the range on Ft. Lewis is called "Range 15". they are the only rifle range around any more that will let you rapid fire (safely) and load more than 10 rounds in a magazine. here's the info on that http://www.fortlewismwr.com/shooting range info 05142 1204.pdf

Tacoma Sportsman's Club won't any more. TSC does have trap, skeet, pistol, rifle and archery ranges. i shoot trap there a bit. its a pretty friendly place.

Range 15 is run very safely just like a military range. obey the RSO and all is well though.

the Marksman is turning more nazi every time i go there. it used to be a fairly relaxed range but now you have to pay a one time $10 fee for their safety class which is about 15 minutes long. after that you get your range card and you're good to go. no more draw and fire exercises allowed there any more and they'll nit pick little things sometimes. its still a decent range though. longest distance there is 45 feet and it gets cold in there in the winter time. bring a coat if you plan on shooting in the cold months.

i haven't shot at Bull'seye in years. its ok. the backstop has a tendency to toss little pieces of lead back at you on occasion and the lanes are sort of enclosed and the concussion from the shot hits you right in the sinuses.

for less formal shooting, check out "the Pit" in Capital Forest. its a popular outdoor shooting spot. please clean up your stuff though. its getting messier and messier and it will be shut down if it keeps up that way. there are ORV trails nearby so watch for people on motorcycles and quads.

hope that helps a little.

hello, I just moved in to the bellingham area and I was wondering if anyone could tell me some outdoor shooting spots around here. shooting range would be fine, but would prefer something outside, in the woods or a field, so I don't have to pay money. thanks

For those around Seattle and points north of there, the Plantation Range is the Whatcom County owned range. It has rifle out to 300 yards and also pistol and small bore. Very, very nice range. I make a 1.5 hour drive there instead of going to other places, just because the range is so nice and the guys that run it don't mess with you. Great facilities. It's a ways north though.... it's off Exit 246 from I-5, which is just south of Bellingham. They do have a web site also... right here:

A little geographical clue in. Pt Townsend may by 30-40 straight line miles, but it is a LONG way in real life, including a ferry ride and a floating bridge and lame traffic. That said, I don't agree that you should stay away from PT (it's a cool town if you're into art/music/micro brews/wooden boats and hippies).
Also "east side" means two things around here. East of Seattle, across lake Washington is Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, etc. Or "east side" can mean east of the Cascade Mountain range which is a totally different (in a good way if you're a hunter) experience.
If you're on the east side of Lake Washington I would suggest Wades in Bellevue (shop and indoor range including rentals). If you want to shoot outdoors I suggest dropping by Renton Rod and Rifle club which is a bit south of Bellevue. It's outdoor pistol, rifle to 200 yards and a shotgun range. There used to be an outdoor range in Kenmore (North of Bellevue). Farther out from Renton is a place in Ravensdale which is a private club, comes highly recommended and does highpower to 600 yards.
The references above about all of the places to the south (Tacoma, Puyallup, etc) are all accurate.
If by East you mean over the cascades then brace yourself: you'll be quite happy.
