My LGS is running a special on several guns for the holiday shopping season.
The special in which I am the most interested is the Mossberg Maverick 88 18.5" security model.

I really don't need another 12ga, but they are selling it for $169.99 and throwing in a 25rnd box of Federal 00buck included in the price.

The way I see it, I'd be stupid not to, but wanted to check with you guys first. Anything you can think of?

Exactly. And I should add, I have a 500 that I shoot all the time. It also happens to sleep next to my bed. I am well familiar with the 500 set up, and frankly, i keep shotguns "cruiser ready" (and I don't hunt) I don't even really care about the safeties so I'm not too concerned about muscle memory or anything.

I just have a hard time saying no at that price.

It is never stupid to keep your money in your pocket.

That's said if you would rather have the shotgun than the $ 190 (gotta love taxes) then by all means, buy the shotgun.

With a $298 msrp?

Seems like a rockin' deal at 40+% off and with some ammo.

That's Chinese import craplicate money there.

That's a great price for a spare or backup, and it's close enough to the 500 you already own. If you have the $170 (plus whatever sales tax is where you live) put away for a rainy day (or a gun deal you can't say no to) go for it.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'd rather have a good sub-$200 shotgun than the same amount of money in the bank. Or in my pocket.

Of course, that's one of the reasons I don't have much $$ in either place :D

If you don't spend the money on that gun, next month you won't have the money and you won't have the gun either.

There are a few differences between the Maverick and the 500. The Maverick has a crossbolt safety on the trigger guard and not on the tang like the 500. The 500 receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope base. The Maverick has a one piece forearm and action bars, so you cannot just replace the forearm. The 500 has a separate metal tube inside the forearm. If you wanted to replace the forearm on your Maverick you would have to replace the whole thing with the 500 set-up.

I really don't have a reason not to do it, except that now I'm torn. I think I might do the responsible thing, and buy ammo instead.
The way I see it, I have my shotguns. I have backups to those primaries.

I could spent $180OTD to get this, or I could get a few hundred rounds of ammo to practice and perfect my techniques at running what I already have.
In the words of the late great Mr. McCraken "buy ammo, shoot ammo, repeat..."

Damn me and my thinking responsibly! I want a new toy!

Let's see...
Great price? Check.
Made in America? Check.
Reliable weapon? Check.
Aftermarket support? Check.

What are you waiting for?
I believe Mossberg's Maverick is made in mexico hence the cheaper cost of production and MSRP. I'll do a quick search but I was researching shotguns about a year ago and came across that.

Nevermind: I searched and the parts are manufactured in Mexico but it is in fact assembled in Texas. The Mossberg 500 parts are manufactured in the USA, so the Maverick 88 is a cost cutting scheme to get a cheaper MSRP for a budget line.

Alright. Turns out, i mentioned my conundrum to my father and he says "don't worry about it. It'll be your Hanukkah present. Go pick it up and it'll be my treat."

So there we have it. I'm getting it anyway.
Score! Way to go dad!

You will not regret that...even if you had paid for it yourself. I have a 500, a 600, and had 2 mav88s the mavericks finish was rougher and the parts were a bit rougher, but smoothed up quickly and nicely. The mavs were my go-to hunting guns as they could be beaten on without so much as a hickup...kinda like what a good HD gun would get if trained with pretty hard. I gave one away to a kid at church and sold one to buy the wife a 20ga pardner pump. For guns in the same market and price point, the mav88 is head and shoulders above the NEF.

Before your father took care of the dalima I, was going to suggest that you buy it, check it over, the wait until the next panic, then triple your investment.

Doesn't mean you can't still take advantage of the sale and trade/sell the purchased one later as fits.

My new friend from Eagle Pass, TX is sitting next to me as I type.
I can totally see why people like these guns.

It doesn't quite have the internal level of fit/finish as my M500. External finish is nearly identical, and actually the Maverick has a slightly more even polish.
The furniture is not great quality. Nobody is going to confuse it for a Hogue stock. BUT it's much better than I anticipated from a shotgun at this price point. I'm impressed enough to call the furniture a win in the value/quality scale. Recoil pad is actually very nice. I'd bet it will help a lot.

The only place where my M500 appreciably exceeds its Maverick counterpart is in the trigger. My M500 has a nice, clean trigger with little travel and a clean break. The Maverick's trigger is mushy, gritty, and vague. Now, it's not like I'm going to be trying for sub-MOA groups at 200 yards with this gun. I have no doubt that for getting lead on target at close range, the trigger will make no difference to me whatsoever.

All in all, I totally understand why people like these so much for bargain shotguns. Almost makes me wonder how the Chinese imports can compete!
