Any suggestions for cheap rifles?

Marlin 981T

To me, this is a beautiful gun.

Note the tubular magazine under the barrel that doesn't stick down out the bottom of the stock like an ugly tumor.

Also, since it has a tubular magazine, you can load it with shorts, longs, or long rifle ammo.

Accurate and reliable too. Probably well under $200 new.

I was going to go into a lengthy detail about the mosin-nagant but I see many people are already doing so. you could also try a yugo SKS for a semi auto rifle.

GEt a Ruger 10/22. you can pick up one for $260 and a cuople of mags for $40 and 500 rounds for $18 and done. I have two great reliable simple.
Also used ones you can find them for $120 and cheaper in very good condition.
Cheers.

I recently bought a Marlin 795. Dunhams had already marked it down from $160 to $130. Marlin will add another $25 to that for a net of $105. Even comes with a cheapo scope you can put on if you like (might be worth $5)

All I have done to the rifle is: drift the rear sight to correct windage (way off from the factory  ), added a sling I had, and added two #8 washers (9c each) under the front action screw to float the barrel. I had started with sandpaper to float the barrel, but it would have taken way too much sanding and would have left the barrel buried in the stock, so went with the washers. The trigger is decent, but not great, will have to do some smoothing eventually.

First five shots of CCI Blazer ammo at 25yd gives me about 1" shooting off the deck railing using the iron sights and a simple lack dot on a sheet of paper to aim at. I am quite happy with it and plan to get to the range this weekend to see what it will really do.

OTOH, my first rifle was a Mosin M91/30. Love shooting it, but gave me a bit of a flinch for awhile, and Mosins breed just as bad as .22's.

Yes a Mosin is much cheaper initially Ala Dan, but down the road it cost more in ammo. Also a Mosin to me is more of a shooter-collector, and not so much for plinking. They have pretty substantial recoil. Don't get me wrong, I do love Mosins. I have a cherry 91/31 octagon receiver that I haven't even shot yet. It's the second one I have owned and I'm looking to buy more. But If I was in his shoes for what he wants to do with it, I'd go for a 10/22 or a Marlin 60 or 795. Just my opinion.

You can get the very beautiful 10-22 Carbine NIB from Academy for about $180. I bought one a couple of months back. But be warned; the factory bolt release and trigger SUCK big time. I changed mine out. I also installed an aftermarket extended Magazine Release as the factory one sucks, or so I was told. I'm not sure because I did this before I shot it. And i installed an aftermarket Rear bolt stop-buffer. I spent right at $33 for a target hammer, then I polished it and the sear with my Dremmel Tool and a polishing wheel and some jewler's rouge and got the trigger pull down to about 2 pounds. I paid about $14 for the aftermarket auto bolt release which works slick as owl poo, and I paid about $10 for the Mag release. The buffer pin was a whopping $3. I think. I upgraded my 10/22 seriously for about $60, but it's first class now.

Also, you can get a Marlin Model 60 for about $130 or so. I don't know how the triggers are on them, but they are easy to load and I think the standard bolt release is better than the 10/22. However the 10/22 is a prettier gun. Then there's the Marlin 795 that uses a Clip type Magazine but I'm not sure on its price, but believe it's cheaper than a 10/22. It depends on how much you want to spend, But these are all three good rifles for the money and good for a first rifle too.

Everybody likes the Ruger 10/22. If there is something you don't like about it you can change it. It's a design on which you can swap parts to your heart's content. I think it's all right out of the box, but it can be tuned and tweaked a bit. I'd suggest getting a couple thousand rounds of quality trigger time before deciding what to change.

I got more comfortable with the factory bolt hold-open after carefully re-reading the instructions. It's not so much clumsy as counter-intuitive and awkward. :D

Thanks everyone! That was a lot of responses. I've been looking around at various shops in my area and have a pretty good idea what is available (and can check it against this list). I have to update my drivers license, since I recently moved, and soon as that is done I'll be getting a .22LR and some accessories (ammo box, ammo, maybe a scope or shoulder sling if its cheap, a cleaning kit, and a case of some sort).

Again, thanks!
