He's beaten me numerous times, I like to hunt from the ground, and it was getting so frustrating late last season I finally climbed about 30' up. About my 5th or 6th hunt from this location he passes under me and I take a shot, it smacks hard! I'm sure he's moments from falling,,but he never does,,just walks off slowly taking two or three steps at a time. I felt sick,,hopeless sick,,how many shots like that am I gunna get?? I'd never taken any practice shots from that height and it burned me good. Last Sat. we met again,,this time I won. Few minutes before dark he followed 2 does and a spike into a clearing just yards from the big timber. All I can tell is I've got 3 maybe 4 deer in front of me. Big doe and a yearling munching on the thick honeysuckle bush, I glass the area and see a spike in the background,,a second later I catch glimpse of a big head come up and it's carrying a bunch of antler. My heart skips a beat and starts to pound, I'm sure it's him and he's about 50 yards away. The action heats up quickly from here,,and good thing cause the light is fading fast. A moment later they turn the opposite direction and head out across open ground and another patch of woods. He wasn't keen on leaving the edge of the wood line he was already near and just continues to browse the honeysuckle. I sense somethings about to happen and turn around to grab the bow, as I look back he's staring at the herd as they move farther away. A second later and he's head down and two steps quartering to me,,another two steps and he's coming at me. It's at this moment my heart rate just exploded. I freeze and try to focus,,I'm pretty sure this is my deer, the one I've wanted for so long. He stops to sniff a branch, licks it a bit and I'm thinking I'm busted,,he has to see me,,I'm 6' off the ground and only 30 yards away. He doesn't, it's unbelievable, just heads down and keeps coming. Pausing at the downed fence, he carefully steps over and passes behind a large oak while I come to full draw. He takes two more steps and is full broad side, pin on and I release. He takes off down the hillside like he was shot from a cannon, how does an animal that big go that fast down that steep a hill??? I dunno,,amazing. After the shot I stayed put for almost an hour,,felt my way out and headed home,,no rain forecast and I was confident the hit was good,,next morning I found absolutely no blood at the shot site, I had to follow his tracks downhill and up a narrow ridge, he had gone about 50 yards.
