....that will actually TAKE A1 LENGTH HANDGUARDS????

Needs to be 12 & 1/8th inches from front of barrel extension flange to the shoulder for the gas block.

Don't say Ballistic Advantage. Been there done that and have the paper weight to prove it.

Don't Say Faxon.

Don't say X-Caliber.

I want an 18 inch stainless, fluted, rifle length gas system (A REAL RIFLE LENGTH GAS SYSTEM, DAMNIT), with a 3/4 inch gas block/front site base bearing diameter at least 1 & 7/8 inches long, 5/8 X 24 threaded muzzle.

Why is that so hard to find????

Brownells - CMMG .308 SS Barrel Bead Blasted Matte Finish - $226.00
No flutes though.

Drop-In Stainless Steel Barrels For Superior Fit & Finish

Chambered in .308 Winchester, these barrels are precision machined from 416 stainless steel for superior fit and finish. All barrels have a 1-10" twist with 5/8"-24 muzzle threads for compatibility with a variety of devices. Barrels are available in 18", 16.1" and 12.5" lengths. The 12.5" barrel accepts .750" gas blocks, has a medium profile, a mid-length gas system, and a nitride finish. Medium taper profile, 16.1" barrel has a rifle length gas system, accepts .750" gas blocks, and features a durable nitride finish for corrosion resistance. The 18" barrel has a heavy taper profile, rifle length gas system, accepts .936 gas blocks, and a bead blasted matte finish.

What's the distance from front of barrel extension flange to the shoulder for the gas block. There are a million barrels out there that meet most of my specifications EXCEPT THAT THEY WON'T PERMIT THE USE OF THE STANDARD MILITARY A1 HAND GUARDS.

I'm not hollering at you, I'm hollering with you... no. ...wait, I just want to make that part clear as that is where everything goes to hell, 12 & 1/8th inches from front of barrel extension flange to shoulder for gas block/front sight base.

Good luck finding specifications on peoples website for that, the most you are going to get without asking is gas length: mid-length, intermediate, or rifle. I posted your question on Brownells Q&A, just because I was feeling helpful. We'll see what they say, when they get back.

Nice, I know not very many like the wood on the AR but I've always thought they were cool. Just have heard that the handguards end up a little thin on material when trying to get them milled down to correct size or close to it. Is that yours?

I will say if one is going to put wood on an AR it should be nicely figured, it looks like your's will end up looking pretty nice after the tung oil.

Here is what I am really after;

You can see by looking at the front sight base that it is too far forward. This is the Ballistic Advantage barrel that is a tad (.30 inches) short in order to accommodate the A1/A2 standard military hand guards. Mount an ACOG on that and it is the perfect rifle ...at least to me.

Hrrmmm....maybe contact shilen, or one of the other barrel makers and see if they will make you exactly what you want. That's a fine looking rifle, and not cheap, might as well get.it perfect.

Thanks. I got four sources now. Compass Lake is at the top because they have a Garand barrel, an M1A Barrel and one other AR-10 Armalite barrel for me a hundred years ago. I had forgotten about them until doing this search and some one reminded me of them. KeyStone is another, I'll add Ragged Hole.

Got a reply back from Brownells:

Your Question for 308AR 18" Barrel HT 416SS (100014876)

On the CMMG 308AR 18" Barrel HT 416 SS what is the distance from the front of the barrel extension to the shoulder of the gas block/front sight base? I'm trying to figure out if a standard A1 Length handguard will fit, it needs 12-1/8".

Current Answers:

This barrel uses aRifle length gas system and is 12" in lenght and will work for the dimension you referenced.

Ordered a custom, from Compass Lake. They know the issues and what I needed. They know A LOT. If you ever want expert, and I mean expert advice this is the place to go. I'm not just talking gas port from breach face distance. ....What ammo are you using? ....that round works best/should be this far of the lands, ....I asked about 175 Federal GMM .040 of the lands and they were right on top of that.

Can't wait until it gets here. It's a Bartlein 5R, 1:10 twist. Sending my bolt down to have the chamber fitted.
