Got my first deer with a Savage 99 in 300 savage. It was my uncle's gun he had owned since I was born. I'm 68 now so it had been around awhile. Had a redding peep sight and the stock had been slimmed down some and had a silver arrow top inlayed in bottom of receiver. It was a svelte looking gun. Don't know what ever happened to it after he passed away, I sure would have loved to have it. I know it killed many deer and a couple elk. I used the 150 Remington core-lock in it. Not sure what he used.

Have a couple 300 Savage rifles one a 99 from the late 40's and a converted Arisaka type 68. The 99 is a model 94 on steroids. It is a natural pointing rifle for me and it seems inherently accurate. I load it with just about any cup and core flat based 180 grain bullet and the deer are always a bang flop if you do your part. Never checked the speed but with 4064 it rivals any 308 out to 200 YDS on target.

If you can't kill it with the 300 Sav, the 308 won't help you. I've killed about a dozen deer with a 99 in 300, and one with a Rem. 81 in 300. Can't remember needing more than one shot except on the runner I took with the 81. The 300 is good for everything except maybe the big bears, and I'm sure plenty of those have been taken with it. Somewhere in my house is a story by Ben East of hunting Polar Bears , and he used a 99 in 300. My dad killed a few deer with his 99 300, my brother has it now. Any original 99 in any caliber is an investment.

That is a rifle on my aquire list. Just haven’t found the right one yet.

If ya can't kill it with a 300 Savage, you can't kill it with a .303 British or a 7.65 Mauser. Or a .30-40 Krag. All the same.
