Just wondering if anyone has some chrono data they could share on the Ruger Alaskan.

I chronographed some Cor-Bon 320 grain hard cast through my Ruger Alaskan 44 and got an average of 1035 fps.

Also ran some Winchester White box 240 grain 44 mag through it at 1211 fps average.

I'm really hoping someone has some Buffalo Bore or really hot reload chrono data, I want to see the maximum this little guy can put out.

In the case of the Ruger Alaskan .44 it is not what the handgun can take, it is what your hand can take :).

I seriously doubt there is a factory load out there that would hurt a Ruger Alaskan. If you are looking for maximum velocity, start with the 180 Grain Bullets. The 320 Grain Buffalo Bores or the 320 Grain Cor-Bons you have already have will kill anything on this planet with perfect shot placement.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Just for kicks I'd really like to see what the 340 grain 44 magnum +P+ will do through it. I can't find anyone who has chronographed it. I may have to do it myself.

I'd be interested to see myself. My guess would be about 1100. I've seen somewhere results from a 4" that were ~1250.

Below is a response from the new owner of GARRETT ammo I received a few weeks back when I emailed him on why their 330 grain +p hammerheads were not recommended for barrels less than 4 inches. Below are his recorded velocities out of the 44 mag Alaskan with various Garrett ammo....hope this helps.

Randy was mostly concerned with “bullet pull” tying up guns and reduced velocity.

Stability is not a concern.

After much testing and determining that on the average a single round can take the recoil ride over 30 times before it will tie up the gun. I believe this also is not a concern. (Test conducted with a 4” Redhawk w/330+P and a 4” 329 w/310HH.)

I very recently fired 12 of each load thru a Super Redhawk Alaskan just to get average velocity and check for problems. Short test but no problems.

Super Redhawk & Alaskan Test Results;

310 Defender 934fps

310 Hammerhead 1092fps

330+P Hammerhead 1161fps

Thank you this is useful. If I chrono BB through my alaskan I will post my results here.

I have quite a bit of experience with this load. I referred to it as "The Punisher". By that...I mean punishing my hand a bit more than the target...when I could hit it. I couldn't shoot as well with it as I'd like.

I used to buy it for kicks (no pun intended) just to get looks at the range as people thought my Super Redhawk exploded in my hand before the debris cloud cleared (yes, it's like shooting a cannon...I don't know what kind of powder he uses either).

I ended up stepping down to some stout leadcast 250 grain loads from Doubletap.

I got the chance to chrono them through the alaskan

Buffalo bore 340 gr 44 mag +p+ put out a surprising 12 shot average of 1230 fps. Temp was 43 degrees and elevation about 4500 ft.

I ran some other ammo through that I chronoed last summer and my numbers were running slower in the cold so I'm guessing by what I saw, I can expect to add about 30 fps to that average in summer.
