Anyone else soured on .22lr?

For some reason it has become the most popular caliber on the planet. I understand that it is an economical training round and there are thousands of guns chambered for it but it shouldn't be in that much demand.

It has been the most popular caliber since the 1800's.

I hope we don't shut this thread down with talk of hoarding and conspiracy. The manufacturers are at maximum capacity and consumers are driving demand. As we all write about looking for the same caliber, it makes no sense to blame each other or a faceless group of scalpers for lack of supply. Truthfully no way of tracking such a thing. There have been retailers whose prices have increased dramatically, CDNN's current flyer is offering Remington's Bucket of Duds (1,400 rounds) for $150, the same bucket I passed on at Gander during the height of the shortage for $79. At the same time retailers like PSA and Midway have sold me CCI SV at $40/brick.

Ammo may not be in stock locally because distributors fill orders for larger customers first and larger customers were probably first to react to increased sales. Manufacturers aren't in charge of shipping to any of our LGSs or the mega stores.

I have about 200 rounds left and I plan to make those last. I won't go out of my way to find more, at least not yet. When I run out and can't find anymore I'll be done with 22lr for good.

I guess I don't understand all this talk of "hoarding", so I looked it up.

Wikipedia says "hoarding" is a general term for a behavior that leads people or animals to accumulate food or other items during periods of scarcity ... Civil unrest or natural disaster may lead people to hoard foodstuffs, water, gasoline and other essentials which they believe, rightly or wrongly, will soon be in short supply.

22LR is already in "short supply" ... the time to hoard it is past!

Besides, why on Gods green earth would you hoard anything during periods of scarcity? That just means you will pay what ever it takes that you can justify or afford ... Are you really that desperate?

Just because a person buys something when it's available and doesn't run out and use it all up immeidently doesn't make them a Hoarder ... just like buying a side of beef in the fall, or stocking up on green beans when they are on sale doesn't make you a hoarder. Buying a commodity and putting it back for future use makes you a prepper.

I still have plenty of .22L.R. put back. But I am getting rid of some of the guns. I hate to get rid of them but I just don't need them. Still some are favorites! I will keep a few! I believe the days of cheap .22L.R. are over! For whatever the reason. It is gone!

I have lost all interest in 22s with the shortage and cost problems. I haven't shot one for months and have considered selling my last 10/22.

I appreciate 22 more than ever now. just like always, you buy when prices are low and enjoy them when prices are high or unavailable. I always order 22 by the 5000 case.

Where are you guys getting 5000 round cases?
There are definitely options out there to buy by the case, you just have to pay the inflated prices ~10c/round and it probably won't be premium ammo. Or step up and pay even more per round for match grade stuff that hasn't increased in price as much, both these options are in stock at the moment

Too bad the shortage has messed with your mind. When you find your price point, think about buying 2-5 yrs worth of 22LR. Then enjoy, but replenish and maintain the inventory to assure you won't get caught short during the next cycle.

I shoot both 22LR and 9mm at steel challenge. Hmmm, the 22LR is more fun... and faster.
This is more or less what I did and it helps.

Today, at the local Cabela's, they had Nosler Match Grade .22 ammo, 500 round brick, $85.99 each, one per person. Guy behind the counter said they had put out 30 bricks yesterday, 2 left today, somebodies got the cash, or idiocy.

Match grade has ALWAYS been expensive.

Price it out. This isn't an unusual price for match grade .22 LR.

I've never been one to buy match grade, because I don't have any use for it. Plinking and squirrel hunting doesn't require it. If I were into competition shooting, I would have. So I don't have as firm a grasp on the historical pricing of the various brands of match grade, but I do know this isn't way out of the ball park.

I was in Florida just recently and rented a bunch of guns at Take Aim range in Sarasota. They had a pallet of .22 cases (5000) rounds right in the middle of the shop floor. That was Aguila .22 target. No CCI though, and I didn't see any at Walmart either...

Oddly, we haven't been affected by the shortage here in the UK. I can get CCI mini-mags any time from the club. We pay a lot though, £7.20 per 100 round box.

I bought 1000 rounds of CCI mini-mag and 500 rounds of RWS target and paid £117. Slightly cheaper in bulk but not cheap (never has been for us across the pond).

That isn't odd at all. People in the UK and other countries aren't freaking out and buying every box they can find.

I can reload 9mm and 38 for 12 cts per round.
Since 22 is close to that price these days I hold onto the small cache of 22 I have and shoot reloads.

I feel bad for those of you who shoot every weekend and have to start shooting higher cost ammo on top of a drive to the range. I can shoot any distance i wish within 5 miles due to running around 1000 acres of crops, more pasture, and neighbors dont mind me on their land either. 22 lr has put a damper on some peoples days that already spend alot on going to shoot guns on weekends.

I haven't found much 22 lr, but when I do, I snag it if its not price gouging. If you look often on ammo seek or something, you can often hit a 2-3 hour slot in which cabelas or other well known stores happen to come up with some on the site. Grab it when you see it. It wont be there when you refresh the page or come back later.

Couple suggestions for those trying to teach your kids:
Get a air gun. Not anymore than 22 lr and you can modify them heavily. Depending on if you get PCP, CO2, HPA, pump, or spring powered, you can get some pretty decent range time. My 22 lr cost me around 120$ for the gun and with another 150-200$ worth of HPA conversion, I will have a gun that is shooting around 1000 FPS with 18.1 grain pellets. Will take out most everything a 22lr is typically used for. It is more accurate than any 22 I have ever used as well. The quality control is better I think, and pressure regulation between shots with air vs 22 powder seems a little more precise. If you want something that is just for shooting and learning the ropes, a CO2 repeater is easy enough to learn.

If your hunting, switch to a shot gun. Not much you shoot with a 22 that you cant stick #5 or 6 shot in like rabbits and squirrels. Ive found its cheaper as well. You can shoot a lot of bullets hunting small game depending on how you hunt. We always get alot, but it just takes more ammo. Shotgun usually is 1 shot and done no matter if they are moving or not.

I will never get cloyed of the.22LR because I am a student of history and the .22 has such a proud history.
The .22 caliber is one of the most useful rounds ever invented. For killing at point blank range, the .22 is the only gun to use.
The .22 short was the bullet of Conney Island NY. They shot it in the shooting galleries in those days.
I have killed some stray cats and crows with my .22 and it has always been fun for targets too.

Normal price on that is $75 to $85 a brick depending on the store markup. It shoots well under half an inch at 150 feet in my Anschutz with zero fliers. I find that it shoots almost as well as $110 a brick Lapua Center X.
