Anyone ever have an action bar failure on a pump?

I have a Mossberg 500 pump with pistol grip forend and pistol grip. I like to shoot it with my fore-end arm locked straight out up high, so it takes most of the recoil. It's easier to aim this way for me. And no, I'm not trying to re-ignite the locked "do pistol grips suck thread".

Does anyone think this is putting too much stress on the dual action arms, and the little roll pins that hold them in?

Thanks.

In twenty years of working on guns I have seen two Stevens model 67 pump guns that had broken action bars.
I have never seen a Mossberg break the action bar.

The dual bars do reduce stress and prevent the slide tube from binding during cycling.

I've seen several Mossbeg's with broken bars, and a number of guns with DAMAGED bars.

Interestingly, the guns with the damaged bars were older guns that the owner's admitted to firing by holding the trigger back and pumping the action.

People who do this little "Hollywood" trick never seem to think that the gun is firing in an UNLOCKED condition, and the only thing holding the action shut is the force being applied to the forearm.

This puts a tremendous strain on the forearm bars and action parts.

Don't think so. You should be able to shoot and the SG stay locked, regardless of hand position. IMHO, this would mean that the force is absorbed by the bolt lugs rather than the forend.

I had a 20 gauge Mossberg 500 break. But it wasn't the bar itself. It was the forearm. The bar broke out of the wooden forearm. So really it was a wood failure. This was an older, single bar gun.

Failure due to normal use - no.

Damage due to "unusal" cicumstances - yes.

But hey I'm the guy that broke a H&R Topper due to "Unusal" circumstances, what do I know? :uhoh:

Don't ask...lets just say I have been know to be active, Rough & Tumble and stuff like that. ;)

Anyone else ever have a Yacht "fall" on their Shotgun...didn't think so... :what:

Years ago, Mossberg made a SINGLE RAIL ! gun.

I had one break on me, and it ignited out of battery. I got a face full of hot gas.

It might have been operator error, but this SHOULD be idiot proof.

Haven't liked Mossberg since.

Mark,

Let me guess, the bar won't go down far enough to accept the round and load it right?

That is what happened to mine and I just threw it away (that and the safey broke two times before that and this was the last straw).

Get yourself an 870 or something else. I've had it with mossberg.

And no, I didn't do any of that hollyweird crap, I just went to pump it one day to fire outside and found that my HD gun was broken (don't know why, it just refused to work right) and that was the last straw.
