Help Shipping a Gun

I'm going to be shipping a Mosin to a fellow C&R holder and I was wondering what steps I have to take since this is my first time shipping a firearm.

Is UPS my best choice? (I'm separately shipping ammo)

Can I pack it in a cardboard box with bubble wrap and something else?

Anything I need to bring other then the recipients C&R?

How much can I expect to pay. (I's going to Kentucky)

I used the local FedEx hub over near Monticello High School when I sent my Colt Python back to Colt for refininshing. I had no problems at all. Check them out. Don't use the FedEx/Kinkos store. They may not be as up on the shipping of firearms as the hub is.

If you are shipping a firearm legally, you need a Federal Firearm License holder to send it (FFL). Easiest way to find one? Go to Gunbroker.com, look at any listing, and down a ways in the listing it will have something to click on to find a FFL in your area. You pay them about $20, and then you can legally send the gun. Priority mail is the best, by far. Add delivery confirmation for sure, and insurance if you are the nervous type... although I think that is not necessary. Avoid UPS. I lost 2 guns, and a host of other items shipping with them (I still ship with them, but everything goes insured for more than its value... I am cleaning up on insurance claims). In 35 years, the Post office has never lost anything I sent. Not a single complaint.

I always ship rifles Priority Mail with a delivery confirmation. You should have a copy of your friends FFL for your records. Insured Priority Mail is usually cheaper than either FedEx or UPS and its a lot less hassle.

You do not need an FFL to send it. Anyone can mail a long gun to an FFL holder, and since both you and your friend have C&Rs, there is no problem at all.
