I originally only had one 1911. I have owned a S&W 4506-1, two different versions of the sig p220, an FN-45, a Glock 45, and an HK45. I now have three 1911s. The original Colt I bought years back, a DW Valor worked on by Dave Severns with Hard Hat, and a new Stainless Valor. All of the other 45s are now gone. None of them shot as accurately and easily as the 1911s do. I have picked up a S&W 625JM .45 acp revolver and I do like it very much. However, for me the 1911 still reigns supreme in the 45 ACP category. I prefer revolvers in higher calibers, and polymers in lower calibers, but for the .45 I have tried just about everything and keep coming back to the 1911.
When you move up to the .45, spring and parts wear are not any worse in the 1911 than they are in any other gun. I keep mine cleaned after shooting but thats about all. In all of the thousands upon thousands of rounds I have fired the only issue i had was with an extractor on a Les Baer. It actually was the only finnicky 1911 I have ever dealt with, and ironically it was the most expensive. Alot of guys at the range have purchased Sig's new 1911s in the last couple of years. They shoot the heck out of them and I have yet to hear any problems.
Every pistol collection should have at least one 1911, one S&W revolver, and one Beretta 92.
