Anyone got a peep sight on their Marlin model 39A? Which one did you choose? Why? Do/did you like it afterwards? What would you have done differently now that you used it? Got a picture?

Recently came into ownership of a ~1975 Golden 39A. Thinking of going with the Skinner brand peep sight myself. I don't know yet if I will have to change the front sight on it. The Skinner seems to make better sense than the Williams or Lyman peep sight hanging off the side of the receiver. Am I wrong?

Yep. I have an early '90s 39AS I bought new back then. I put a Williams 5D on it about a decade later. Either Skinner didn't exist or I didn't know of them when I installed my Williams.

While the Williams isn't as streamlined as the skinner, the Williams has gobs of elevation adjustment and it works with the standard Marlin front sight.

In shooting my Marlin with the Williams over the last decade, it works just fine. Get yourself some different diameter apertures to suit your shooting needs for the day. Since the 5D doesn't have a quick adjust feature, I just dial it in for 50 yards.

If I had to do it again, I guess I wouldn't mind target knobs for quick adjustments to 100 yards. Truthfully though, I hardly ever use my Marlin as a 100 yard gun. So no, I really don't need target knobs.

If that would have come out when I was looking for a rear aperture for my Marlin, I would have bought it. It is so much more narrow than a Williams and looks to be a great field rifle aperture.

It looks like you have to get a new front sight for your gun to work with the Skinner, so add that to the "cart".

"FOR MARLIN LEVER ACTION RIFLES

THESE ARE OUR SUGGESTED FRONT SIGHT HEIGHTS (ramp mount) FOR SKINNER APERTURE RECEIVER SIGHTS:

Due to variables beyond our control we cannot guarantee these to be correct for your

These heights are on the TALL end and will allow you room to trim with a file to an exact fit.

ALL HEIGHTS ARE MEASURED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DOVETAIL TO THE TOP OF THE SIGHT.

After trimming use SKINNER BLUE to touch up the top of your sight.)

I don't have a Skinner sight, love my fp. Also have the williams top mount fp sight, don't care for that one. I like the looks the side mounted peep sights give better.
This is all personal preference mind you.

I put a Redfield aperture sight on my '63 39A. It has stayed there all these years. I do find I now prefer a flat top post front sight, so I have put a flat top ramp front sight on all my lever guns.

I have had my '69 Mountie only for a few years. I put a Williams Foolproof rear sight on it with the flat top ramp front. It works fine, but I am not sure of the durability.

I originally put a Williams Foolproof rear on a Winchester 9422, but that didn't look at all structurally sound, so I replaced it with the Skinner sight. I am coming to feel that the Skinner may be the best way for me to go on all of them.

I have a Lyman 66 on mine. I had a Williams 5d, but its a sort of cheap sight and doesnt adjust very easily.

I've used the Williams Foolproofs, they are good sights, I just like the looks of the Lymans much more. The Skinners dont appeal to me at all, and look like thay arent easy to adjust, the 5D would be easier.

Not sure why a side mount isnt "structurally sound". Theyve been around a very long time. I've used many of them without complaint, and I'm not kind or gentle to many of my guns.

All time favorite is the Lyman 56. Very classy looking sight.

Skinner here, on two Marlins, a 39A and 39D. Great sights. Simple, rugged, streamlined. Really like them for my rifles.

peep sight

I put a Williams 5D on my Marlin 39 D (as in dawg). I sighted it in at 35 steps. I used a bullseye I made with a nickle and a magic marker. It put 5 minimag HP's into that spot. It held that zero until I could no longer see that size target. I put an FP on my sons 39A years ago. If he shoots at something it gets hit. Pick a type of ammo sight it in real good with that ammo and stick with it although it doesn't hurt a bit to plink with others.

I've had a williams, 5 d I think, since the 70s. Love it, makes rifle super accurate especially at the range. Used to win lots of turkeys with it.
Good luck

I acquired an old ruger .44 mag carbine, got open sights on it, thinking bout a ghost sight peep sight for it, it is accurate as can be in daylight but I am 61 now, don't wanna scope it and I got couple rifles with peep sights....I love this little carbine...but like I said a scope is not what I want I got it for hogs up close in the brush.

I have aperture sights on four rifles. Target sights like the Brno Standard, Tech sights, but for the lever action rifles the Skinner is an easy choice. Low profile, sturdy, and the changeable apertures make it versatile. I have removed the aperture ring on my 39 mountie since it's used for fun shooting under 75 yards and the large opening lets you pick up that soup can faster.

Order the front sight too, you'll most likely need it.

I have a skinner lopro on a marlin 1894 right now. nice thing about it is that it mounts low enought that a standard front sight can be used. many of the other skinner sights require a special tall front sight.

I have also used a williams 5d, and while it is bigger and uglier, it is more adjustable and I liked shooting with it better. Tang sights are more traditional, but I have never cared for them much.
