I'm looking for a new folder for EDC. I'm carrying a Spydie Military so I'm not concerned with size. The Military is not a bad knife, I'm just looking for new. This is the only assist-opener that really appeals to me right now. Any info would be appreciated and if you know of an assist-opener that is in the same price range- fire it out, it might spark an interest.

I have a Heat (and the smaller one, the Sizzle.) It is an excellent knife, the blade comes out with a hearty thwack. It feels great in the hand. It is EXCELLENT!!!! I highly recommend it!! It is a very solid knife!! You will be happy with it.

I personally like the Kershaw/ Ken Onion Bump better. It feels better in my hand. Have you looked into any of the Kershaw/ K.O.'s?

I haven't checked out Kershaw yet. I have heard nothing but good about them though. I am not familiar with the Bump. Now comes the new research. I will take a look and see what we have. Is the Heat any larger than the Spyderco Military? I have brought out the Spyerco for mundane tasks and gotten undue attention. Not that the Heat and the authoritive opening wouldn't catch a few looks. Thanks for the response!

They are very different knives. The Military is a flat 2-d knife while the Heat is a 3-d knife. The blade on the Military is larger than the Heat's.

I had one and HIGHLY recommend it as a great EDC knife. I sold mine to buy my Camillus Dominator, with Titanium handle and S30V SS blade it is nearly indestructible. I've carried it for quite awhile not and use it daily. It still looks like new. They are very tough.

My wife was hoping you guys would say it was a piece of junk don't buy it. But I will probably pick one up this week, thanks for the input folks. BTW, 9teen11, what's with the blade shape on the Ken Onion Bump? I'm used to different cutting angles, does this one do anything better than conventional shapes? It is interesting, though.

If you're not set on the Heat, and can go a little large on EDC, then I can't say enough about this knife. It's quickly become my favorite folder, and favorite knife overall:

I have the non-special forces one, with the titanium-nitride-coated tan blade. It opens slick as a whistle, with the backside index-finger-stud (I guess it's called a "flipper"), has the double locking mechanism, and you can put the clip into any of 4 spots (either side; either end). Has a great look and feel to it as well.

That's pretty slick. I like the idea of a hilt. That hand slipping up onto the blade idea doesn't bide well with me. 4 position clip? Definately will be checking this one out. I had seen the advertisements for it but apparently missed some of the features. I like CKRT knives, I like the prices even more. Thanks for the info GunGoBoom.

Yeah and it was only $44 retail at the store whre I bought it - way under the $75 MSRP. I think you'll like it. :) Only thing is, it's a little thick, which may not suit your EDC needs. I like my clip 'backwards' from how most people like it - one reason I really like that knife.

CRKT always amazes me with the prices on their knives, good quality for the money. The instructor that I had in defensive knife classes was big on the Spyderco Police model and taught "tip down" carry. Which is funny because that is the only way that you can carry the Police model. I am used to the carry method due to the fact the Military is the same setup. Maybe trying a different carry style would get my lazy butt to practice. I'm probably a little rusty, no, I know I am, so a little variation would be a good thing. I think that once I got used to the thickness of the knife, it really wouldn't be a problem. Great, now I have to buy two new knives and practice until I figure out which one suits me. If only all problems were this bad.

i'll be recieving a Camillus Sizzle in a few days, which is the little brother of the Heat. i'll report back to you. since i'm getting 3 (good group deal) i might take one apart one to take a gander at how it looks inside. (and put it back together...)

Definately keep me updated. If the report is good, I will probably be ordering mine Friday-ish.

If you don't need assisted open, I like the Benchmade 701 series for a EDC. I learned about this great knife on Bladeforum.

The only assisted open knife I own is a SOG Flash II and I like it. Its a bit small for what you want though as it only has a 3.5 inch blade size.

got them today. very nice knife. a bit small, the Heat's probably pretty good for a main knife. i love it : it's small, black, serrated, evil, and MINE! and it's sharp. already nicked my finger...

the Zytel in the inside of the liner has somewhat of a sharp corner, i'll probably smooth it with another knife.

easy to close, the spring starts working at around 30 degrees out, then goes on inertia from 90 degrees out.

I have a Camillus Heat. It's a great knife with nice opening action from the trigger.

I have a few other AOs. If you like Benchmade, you can go with the Apparition that opens on the thumbstud (like most of them). Check out the SOG Trident which has some nice features including a safety lock so the blade doesn't open when close. (Interesting how few AOs have that safety lock).

Kershaws are known for AOs. I like the SpecBump though I don't have one. I have a couple Leeks and love them.
