Does anyone have a 243 that will shoot the 55-70 grain bullets as well as it will shoot the 100 grainers? Rifle brand and barrel twist?

Looking for a new bolt gun varmint rig, but want it to be in the 55-80 grain bullet range.

Was looking at the 6mm creedmoor, but those favor the 100+ stuff. So, that took me back to the 243.

Also been reading on the 22 creedmoor as a possible option. Not a 22-250 fan before anyone offers that idea up.

Not fancy but a cabelas special axis2 of mine shoots 58,80 and 100 gr. We shoot clay disks at 200. Plane Jane reloading. H414 for 100. Blc2 for the others. Fun for me anyways. The girls shoot it good but say they like the pink .223 better. Good lord

Guy gave me a box of 55gr NBT when they came out.
Never used em.
Think 70gr is light enough in a .243 win.
Rem 700 sporters gave me excellent accuracy w handloads (70gr NBT).
Whatever the factory twist was/is.

I have a Ruger M77 and I shoot the Hornady 75 gr. V-Max bullets almost exclusively. Very accurate for me using Varget powder. However, most of my shooting is 125 yds or less.

Keying in on 55 & 100 gr, THEN point b to follow.... Remington (pre bankruptcy, idk about current), savage, and ruger all use 9ish twists that will run 55+ just fine (sometimes some heavy vld too), the 1:10 from win and howa can be finicky with 90-100 gr boattails (not all but some) haven't played with Tikka or Weatherby or any other 1:10 (eta most modern1:10 will shoot the as good as the rest of the platform and include 95 gr sst and 85 gr sgk and 85-100 gr flatbases for deer+, so this is the best blanket answer i have to your blanket question).... point B: as an avid varminter with several .223s, a couple .22-250s and a few .243s, I have to ask why not a .22-250? Curiosity WILL kill this cat but I got ta know!!! .243 easy button is a Savage with a chassis or other varmint stock, running the best wind bucking varmint bullet you can grab with GOOD glass and a steady rest, ruger being second, 55ish bullets in* these barrels? I slow down to 4166 powder, perfect precision at a velocity that won't tear the little bullets apart, never tried going faster than mid range 4166 and 55 though, barrel life is bad enough as is.

I had an R700 in 6mm Rem that shot the 65 and 75 Vmax pretty well- could slay prairie dogs at 300 yards, and currently have one in 243 that shoots the 65's into 3/4" groups. Pretty sure those all have 1:9.25 twists.

Lowest cost, super accurate option for a bolt gun is
Savage Axis II (57367) in 243 $360, remove barrel
NSS Criterion pre-fit Savage 243 Win 26” varmint barrel 1-8 twist $325, wrench $28 , go/no-go gauges $70
Some assembly required. $800 gun will shoot 107gr VLD’s and will outshoot any and all factory guns.

A super accurate factory 243 is the Savage 12 LRP 1-9.25 twist for $1100. But many a shooter gave up on this fine rifle shooting 100+ grainers.

Any 1-10, 243 should do well with that range.

If you really want to optimize the lighter bullets, you could always get a barrel turned up with a 1 in 12/14
^^^^^What he says. You need a slower rifle twist for the lighter bullets. Difficult to find a rifle that shoots everything accurately. Another thing with the lighter bullets depending on the blazing velocities you load them, they may self destruct in mid-air. A rifle you may consider for great out of the box accuracy besides the Savage, is the Tikka T3 Super Varmint. Manufacturer guarantees a 5 shot group of MOA or better at a 100 yds on the super varmint and 3 shot moa groups on the non-super varmint barreled rifles.

I had a Ruger varmint/target in .243 pre Hawkeye m77. It shot almost everything great but was more brand sensitive than weight. It was so heavy to tote around.
