Anyone here ever buy one of these BP kits?

Not on your life. And that is what you are risking. I've been shooting black since 1967, often a keg or more a year. Volatile stuff. Read about plant blow ups before you start in!

To make the best and most consistent powder you're going to need to corn it not just run it through a ball mill and screen it.

Yeah, but I'm not planning on making any. Was just curious if anyone tried it out and how it worked out. Looked like an interesting kit.

Those kits are kinda on the expensive side also the charcoal is only good for fireworks. It makes slow dirty powder.
It is not crazy to make your own powder just be careful.

I beg to differ. Most folks are not very good at careful.

I belong to several different forums where people make their own. They all seem to be very careful. One of these days I'm going to make some of my own. Your differ has been noted.

It's worked for me so far, and you don't need a fancy kit to make BP. If you shoot competition, I can see going the extra mile, but regular shooting? Homemade is a little lower power, but there is just that internal smile of knowing you did it yourself.

Real black powder is virtually unobtainable around where I live so if you want it you either make it or have to travel a long ways and pay a ridiculous high price for the stuff. I partner up with a friend and we make the stuff ourselves. So far we've had no problems. I do agree that there will be an idgit or two out there that will remove himself from the gene pool in fiery and spectacular way.

You’d think we’d hear about it if it’s happened recently…

There are plenty of dim witted, and/or ignorant folks out there.
Life is just too easy in most ways these days that folks don't need to understand or know how to do pretty much anything or have any ambition.
Look at the number of folks who would likely die if they had to actually either cook a bag of rice or starve.
Fortunately, most of those folks aren't going to grind their own coffee beans let alone make Black Powder.

Right you are sir, however those types will most likely be the very first in line to DEMAND that others give up what they have to take care of them.

You have to remember powder manufacturers make vast quantities of powder. I'm sure they do a pretty good job of keeping dust down but all it takes is one hot spark. There was an explosion at a fireworks plant 30 miles north of here back in the 80's, They said it was probably caused by a short in a hot glue gun. A one man operation making small quantities outside runs a lot less risk than a factory.

Don't worry, the gubmint will make it happen soon. The ATF already has a new rule published for comment because they are going to make reloaders register their powder supplies and be open to annual inspection of their storage. I haven't seen any comment on here about it at all.

The ATF is gonna blow up a hobbyist powder maker?

Why on earth would anyone tell the FD what they have in the garage?

How many other False Flag Events do you think have happened in the last 2 decades? Also, the ATF is doing another Unconstitutional rule that will make you a felon if you don't!

Under the Regulatory Flexibility Act, 5 U.S.C. 601–612, we have considered whether this proposed rule would have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities. The term “small entities” comprises small businesses, not-for-profit organizations that are independently owned and operated and are not dominant in their fields, and governmental jurisdictions with populations of less than 50,000. ... By approving this proposed rule, the Attorney General certifies that it will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities. ATF estimates that this rulemaking will have an impact on approximately 9,674 licensees or permittees, with the majority of those being small businesses. The notification is estimated to take 30 minutes annually for a phone call and to provide written notification, most likely by email.”

This, doesn’t apply to you or me.
