I was just wondering if any of you talented people here make your own (or have attempted to) gun stocks. I tend to get bored easily and need a new project.

I have refinished several of my own and have been very pleased with the results. However, all but one of these had plain wood and I’m looking to produce something a little more impressive. I’m fairly talented when it comes to wood working (I built cabinets for a couple of years) so I’m confident in my abilities. However, I’m wondering if it will be more trouble than what is worth.

I’d like to make one for a Win Mod 94 and probably another for a Win Mod 70. I’m considering making my own laminate stock for the Mod 70. Any thoughts? Am I nuts?

Yep, but only for blackpowder and I don't consider myself any good. Still waiting for a #49 rasp to come in. When it's time to put down the spokeshave, plane or chisel, it's RASP time. The #49 removes wood fast!

I've mad them for Black powder also. Use Curley Maple. Expensive but very nice. Made some grips for a vaquero out of curly walnut.

Built a black powder rifle kit so far. Did quite a bit of work with the gouges to get the stock the way I wanted it from thr rough milled state it was in.

Now I'm looking into getting a .22 to make a project out of. Probably will make my own stock.
Still debating on whether I go with a solid blank, or a two tone laminate. Could hand pick each peice for grain, and maybe even save money buying thinner peices laminating it yourself. Careful attention to growth rings, and some good glue should result in a very stable stock, that can still have the finish of your choice over the resin impregnated shiney look of a lot of laminated stocks.

Haven't even bought the rifle yet, so I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

Your not the only one with the idea though :)
