A heavy vehicle like a MBT would be a pain to own. Besides to the cost of fuel, and maintance. Just finding replacement parts in this country would be a nightmare. Then you would need to have a tractor to haul it around, but because of the weight you would probably have a problem being able to take it anywhere. Roads and bridges are not built to support that kind of weight, plus the tracks would tear up the road surface. I believe the only way to transport any distance would be by train.

BUMP

Look what I found for sale today on my way out to the range

Guy doesn't have a price listed though and I didn't wanna just walk up and ask like a fool.

a T-72 would make a killer lawn ornament... especially if you started it up every now and then to compact the lawn and ditch :D

neighbors would freak hehehe

Hummers, CUCV's etc ARE for sale from the US Gov.

I'm pretty sure they de-mill (crush) the Hummers first. A few intact vehicles have escaped over the years, but it's not the normal policy.

Nomad,

From the same site you linked:

http://www.olive-drab.com/od_mvg_hmmwv_howtobuy.php3

"Unlike the WW II jeeps which were sold as surplus to the general public by the U.S. Government, the policy regarding the HMMWV has put them mostly off-limits to civilians. The reasons for this policy are not completely clear. Officially, the problem is DOT. The US Department of Transportation has a lot of requirements for what a civilian motor vehicle has to be and the HMMWV (military model) does not meet them. Things like doors with side-impact protection (basic HMMWV has just a web strap), lighting (military lighting falls short), and padded impact-absorbing dashboard (Army issues bare metal). "

I stand by my statement that the general policy is not to sell HUMMVEE's to civilians and that the few that have been legally sold have been under exceptional and unusual circumstances.

Edit: Here's an official link from the DRMS program:

http://www.drms.dla.mil/pubaff/html/faq_-general.html

" Q. Can I buy a Jeep?

A. No. We don't sell the M-151 series of vehicles commonly referred to as Jeeps. The Department of Transportation has ruled that jeeps are built for off-road use and could become unsafe at high speeds. For public safety, we render them inoperable prior to sale (i.e., crush the unitized body and suspension system).

Q. Can I buy a Humvee?

A. No. The military version of the Humvee does not meet the Department of Transportation safety standards and is not offered for sale. "

That's for road use. If you modify it to 'street legal' you will be fine. (Hence the DOT...)
Go to the other site and look, or I will get DRMO's phone number when I go to NAS Pensacola for my Dr apointment on the 16th if you want.

There's enough being sold for my Old Sgt Henderson to make a living at it... and I'm sure he's not the only one.

Here's the CUCV's, and I'm sure I could find the Hummers also (Might not be in as complete condition I'll grant you that, but you CAN get all the parts/pieces you would need...http://cgi.govliquidation.com/auction/view?id=1180361&convertTo=USD&tid=GLSPPR5728

Nomad,

I still disagree. You aren't going to get a HMMVV out of the DRMO program. The links I listed explain why not. Now, plenty of *other* vehicles are available and can be made street legal after your purchase.

If you'd like to check with DRMO yourself and post your info showing that I'm wrong, that's fine. Remember, I'm saying that it is specifically "HUMVEE's" that are not available without being crushed. Other vehicles are OK.

If you really know of someone who has a legit source of (non-crushed) HUMVEE's for sale, I'd be interested in knowing about it.

Interesting, seems the dealers (Like my old Sgt) get most of them,
Like HERE: http://www.xhumvee.com/
http://www.povn.com/humvees/index.htm
Where military Humvees most certainly ARE for sale.

I'll have to get with another buddy of mine, he knows the system and was talking about getting one...possably military members get hooked up. PSSSS Anybody want to buy a hummer?:D :p

-Just saw your above post... will do.

It looks like your source is selling the "ex-Marine" HUMVEE's. These came out of a deal the Marines did where they traded old vehicles for other equipment they needed. It was a one-time thing and wasn't a normal DRMO program.

In my first post I said, "A few have escaped over the years, but it's not the normal policy." Those ex-Marine HUMVEE's are the best example. That was a special and unusual circumstances that isn't likely to be repeated.

Note that the site you posted says: "We used to have more than 60 in stock, however, we are now down to around 15, and we will not be able to get any more. After these are gone, we are out of business."

I'll check, and get back with you.

I've been wrong before... this one time I thought I was wrong... (Yea, old, but funny):p

Personally, I think something like that Ferret armored car would be really nice to own - it's got a 6cyl, 130hp engine in it, so it'd be reasonably fuel efficient, too. If you could keep the turret .30 cal MG, but maybe have the receiver cut, you could still convert it to be semi-auto (ie get a new receiver for it), yes? With the armor on the thing, it'd be a pretty neat thing to have for, say, a range officer to tool around in. :p

Failing that, I don't think I'd mind seeing a couple thousand of the things purchased/made and sent to the southern border.

I think i might move to USA to buy that puppy, if i was at home, in australia, i think I'd be shot by the cops. Hmm yeah, it would be nice to go on the freeway in a tank
