Appleseed .22LR Ammo

Federal bulk pack (550 rounds) from Wal Mart works for me.
Whatever you use, take it to the range and make sure it runs reliably. Having issues during the AS would be a pain in the @$$.

The only thing I've ever fed the 10/22 is Fed BulkPack. Runs fine, but sometimes I get a flyer.

I'd rather go with a more consistent ammo for the AS. It's been a longtime since I've had to qual on a range.

I used Federal American Eagle 38 gr. HP. in a late '90's 10/22 LTR. And I have the Rifleman patch to prove it ;) .

I did some testing and it shot the 2nd tightest groups from my gun, but was the also the cheapest ammo I could buy that was brass cased! win-win

I think Widener's had a sale on at the time so I bought 4,000 rounds. It has actually been very reliable and accurate in my other .22s as well.

Each .22 will have an ammo preference. The best advice is to buy & shoot a bunch of different brands and see what your gun likes best.

ETA: There seems to be a theme here. I think Federal makes the best rimfire ammo by a long shot.

I'm hoping to do an Appleseed this year. I've only tested 3 brands but CCI SVs group the best in my 10/22 so far.

Federal bulk is good enough for practice in my rifle and it's more available where I live. Most all FTF/ FTE were due to a dirty action or magazines.

Whatever is the cheapest, most reliable and yields acceptable accuracy. My LTR runs good on Federal bulk and shoots MOA with them. I scored a 242 with the combination.

Man, you've just got to see what you're rifle likes. My 2 Rugers would not shoot Federal Bulk to save their lives... they would jam every 5th round at least... but they eat the Remington Golden Bullets all day long (which so many people report problems with). I know a lot of people who claim the opposite results.

One smart idea would be to buy some smaller boxes of several types of ammo to see what the rifle likes, and then buy that kind in bulk.

Henschman.....

That is what I plan on doing.

Would like to hear what selections others have found to be reliable in order to narrow my search.

At this point I'm thinking of CCI Select, Wolf Match, and possibly something from Eley.

I know a lot of people who claim the opposite results.
Some folks complain too much and others just repeat what they've heard. I've always had excellent results with Remington GB's and use a bunch of them, 2000-3000rds a month. I've got a CZ that piles them into a half inch at 50yds with boring regularity. I'll probably use them at my next shoot. The tend to run true to their advertised velocity, where Federal runs 100fps slower. So they have a little more oomph to more positive cycle the action. My Ciener 1911 conversion won't run on anything else.

It would not be worth it, at least for me, for the expense of match grade ammo at an appleseed if a flavor of bulk pack is good enough.

My 10/22 also likes the Federal bulk pack just fine which what I have used the appleseed I went to. It actually likes everything I've ever shot through it except the Thunderbolts.

The "best" ammo I would run in a 10/22 for shooting that much in a day is CCI Standard Velocity. Don't bother with the Wolf Match Target, CCI Green Tag, RWS Target Rifle or Eley for your 10/22 unless you just want to spend the money on it.

But CCI SV should do the trick. It's very accurate in my 10/22 and can be found around $25-28 a brick. If one of the bulk packs shoot well for you, that would be all the better, as you can get more shooting for the $$ spent! And I think the junior team locally uses one of the grades of Aguila for practice. Naturally I can't remember which one it is, other than to say it does shoot well for them.

Federal Bulk 550 is what I use. It's accurate enough for Appleseed purposes out of my rifle. For my rifle shooting Remington GB I might as well have been flinging it at the target with a slingshot.

The last one I worked we had a shooter who was using Federal Auto Match and the cold temperatures (teens - mid 20's) really wreaked havoc with that ammo. He had very inconsistent velocities and a lot of underpowered rounds. He shot rifleman with the other ammo he was using before that, and switched to Auto Match when he ran out, so it wasn't his rifle.

My Rugers and S&W 1522 all like the Federal Auto Match, it is bulk packed 325 rounds to a carton. Can be tough to find so I normally buy 10 to 15 boxes whenever I find it for sale. Midway currently has it in stock, and I have seen it in Wal Mart as well.

I'll agree with the multiple suggestions for Fed Bulk - I earned the patch on it.

I'll also add Winchester 555 bulk. It actually has performed a bit better for me than the Federal has, at the same price. I've socked away a few thousand rounds of it as a result.

The rifle likes the Fed Bulk Pack. The only problem is the occasional flyer, other than that it seems good to go.

Will probably shoot the 2nd day with the PTR-91.

Not sure how much of a problem those flyers will be since I'll be qual'ing the 2nd day with the PTR.

+1 for the Federal bulk. I replaced my extractor with a Volq one about a year ago and any jamming problems I had disappeared.

There is one thing I have learned from being an Appleseed shoot boss and seeing hundreds of .22s on the line... just because someone else had a good or bad experience with a certain type of ammo, it doesn't mean you will have the same experience. Even with the same make and model of rifle, sometimes a certain rifle will just love (or hate) a certain type of ammo. I'm not quite sure why. The best thing to do is to experiment with some different types and see what your rifle likes the best.

And with that PTR-91, you will really benefit from a rear sight adjustment tool, so you can zero your rear sight so that your apertures work at the proper ranges. Zero it at 25m using the 200m aperture and you will be pretty darn close at full distance.

I like a couple different options for accurate semi-auto shooting.

First is Federal Gold Medal load number 719. It runs at 1200 fps which seems to cycle more reliably in my autoloaders than the subsonic loads. It also shoots about as well in any of my firearms as any other high velocity ammo out there, regardless of cost. At no more than $4 a box it certainly isn't bulk pack prices, but it certainly doesn't break the bank.

Another option is CCI Minimags. They seem to be fairly accurate in my rifles. Never the best, but far from the worst. Again, not dirt cheap, but not break the bank as well.

Recently I have been playing with the CCI Tactical ammo. I know the name sounds ridiculous, but it feeds perfectly from all of my autoloaders and has been pretty much as accurate as Minimags and runs a little cheaper in the end. Ignoring the name, it works pretty well for the money.

Federal bulk pack certainly see their use. For the bulk (no pun intended) of my shooting the red box bulk packs are my main go to for the autoloaders and the blue box Champion 510 for bolt rifles. The 510 seems to shoot a bit better for me but doesn't always cycle an autoloader overly well. The standard bulk packs cycle better but shoot worse pretty much across the board.

I know that leaves a lot out. There are a ton of different choices that you could try from dirt cheap to borderline expensive. Getting out there and trying some out seems to be the best bet. For Appleseed though, I would go with something midgrade. Not the top tier match ammo, but something a little nicer than the bottom of the barrel bulk stuff either.

As long as it works, jams are a PITA when your shooting timed AQT's.

Figure out what your .22 shots well and bring two bricks.

FYI, bring extra mag's, so if one act's up you can throw it aside and keep loading good ones. I'd recommend at least 5-6 known good mags.

All good info that I appreciate.

Henschman.....

My PTR is already sighted at 25m using the 200m aperture:)

Got that from BTP after reading his book and doing our own impromptu AQT. I find the 200m aperture is all I use.

my 10/22 won't shoot federal bulk well at all. ridiculously large groups and at least one FTF or stovepipe every couple magazines. same story in my wife's marlin 795. both rifles cloverleaf well with cci minimag and federal gameshok. the federal bulk i have is a few years old. maybe it's improved recently.
