AR-10 in 308 vs a 30-30 lever action for hog hunting

I agree they aren't that hard to kill, dropping one in it's tracks seems a lot harder to do.
You said seems a lot harder, so have you tried it or not? Most I have shot with rifles fell right over. Bang Flop. Again, I dont understand this armor plated hog stuff. They are worth respect just due to the punishment they can dish out, but actual ability to absorb lead from bottleneck cartridges I would consider little different from deer.

200 gr 35 Rem in 336 Marlin straight stock for me. Been woods carrying since 1964.
I will admit I been working with 170 grain boolit 30-30 lately in 336 Marlin straight stock.

I just can’t get used to the AR platform, it just ain’t natural to this old 72 yo fart.

If you want more than one hog take the AR and you might get 2 if there is some open space. Hogs scatter like fleas upon the first shot...

Yes seen dad shoot one with a 270 that acted like it was a starter pistol for a 200m Sprint. When we opened the chest it looked like cherry Jello.
I'll admit do think adrenaline has a lot to do with it I've seen them run with dogs like dad's above and shot over feeders.

Which one do you think is best for hog hunting in brush?

I'd say the .30-30, but that's just because for me the ergos of an AR just don't feel right for hunting. The times I've taken mine out it felt like I was getting poked and prodded by protrusions from the gun. That said .308 ammo is a lot easier to find (and cheaper) than .30-30 at the moment, so for high volume it might be worth it.

The bullet might have something to do with it. I have shot maybe a hundred and did not find them particularly tough. And I dont think adrenalin matters a hoot either. Check youtube vids of Aussie and New Zeland hunters, the guys shoot them all day with 243 win and up. There is a good vid of a fella on an ATV with a 357 lever chasing down pigs and shooting them one after the other. He just keeps riding for miles and miles and finding more pigs and keeps gunning them down. Thats rear end and raking shots too.

I hunted a friend's place for close to 20yrs and put a LOT of pork on the ground. We used whatever we had on us at the time. My main rifle was a Ruger Compact in .308 with a Burris 1.5-6 on top. The whole thing weighed in a about 6 3/4 pounds with 5 rounds.

I've never had a lever 30-30 but my lil pop gun is right there with one velocity wise. I used plain ol 150gr Rem CL'S most of the time.

As to drop at the shot, some did some didn't. Shot placement is key and a heart lung shot could go either way just like a deer. Some drop on the spot, some don't.

I've only had an AR 10 for a few year now but it has a few hogs to its credit. I would have had a ball with it on my friends place but at the time used a cheap SKS. That said, like mentioned above, I was better with the scoped bolt action than the auto loader. It was the 5 shot thing that got in the way. We got around that with a Redhawk in 41 or 44 mag. They were usually just as good out to 100yds.

Our loaner gun at the farm is a lever 30-30 and lots of them have been dispatched with it. Never hunted them with my AR-10 rifles but the various AR-15’s I use are better suited to mount thermals to and they make all the difference in success. Unless they are running around during the day in your area.

I guess it depends on the style of hunting you're doing. I find AR10 rifles to be overly heavy. Fine for sitting in a stand or riding in a Side by Side ATV. Not so great for lugging around hunting on foot.

I've been re-watching Longmire on Netflix and have to echo @marksman13 reading this thread makes me want to pull out my Winchester 94 and take it hog hunting.

Thank you all for the feedback. I put together a full-size AR-10 in 308 and an 8.5” AR pistol in 300 BLK. Both have red dots and green lights. We had success with both, and we had success with my good ole Savage 30-06. I do still want a lever gun. I’m a big guy and in good shape, but that 308 got heavy pretty fast. The AR pistol is nice, but I shoot better with a full size gun. I also never got a chance to get off multiple shots. Maybe a suppressor would help.

Na. A suppressor isn’t going to help you get multiple shots. They still blow out of there like their tails are on fire. Only way to get multiple shots is to catch them out in an open area.
