If you you get a good AK like a converted Saiga, I'd have to say an AK. Why? Because an AK will keep working a lot longer if separated from its cleaning kit, and at 2 MOA is accurate enough. if I had to choose one gun, AK. Hands down.

Same here.

I like that AR look, is that 20 inch long barrel ? My first time to see that kind of rear sight too.

I love them both, they both do what they were intended to do beautifully...I had to go with the AK though, I am just a sucker for the original bad ass...

an ak was the first gun i ever bought.
i wanted something very simple to start out.
oh, and it was cheap... :D
i also liked the idea of the 7.62x39's stopping power.

i figured if i wanted to hit something farther away, i would get another gun just for that purpose.

eventually, i decided i did indeed want something in .223,
but i didnt want to pay ar type $$,
and i again wanted something simpler, sooo
i got a galil :)

if i ever get something in an ar type platform, itll be a .50 beowulf

I would say it depends on what you want to do with it. Hard to give a meaningful reply with out knowing that. The AK is much cheaper to feed. Without any other criteria I would buy the one you can get with out being screwed on the price. They are two guns that every gun lover really should own.

Haven't read the thread yet, but I'm gonna answer the way I'm guessing a lot of folks have: It depends.

I bought an AR because I wanted one. I already had a 7.62X39 rifle in my Yugo SKS. I like it more than the AK's I've fired, so I saw no need for an AK.

If I was looking for a purpose, I'd have to weigh the options. for SHTF, AK is rugged and reliable, but not as accurate, and there isn't as big a domestic supply of ammo for it. The AR is more prone to trouble when dirty, but the US military uses 5.56, so there are many domestic sources to feed it. The conundrum is a gun that works is useless without ammo, and a gun that fails likely won't un-fail in the face of enormous supplies of gunny chow.

ARs are better, because that is what I bought. :p Well at least they are sexier and are many more times accurate. If you want more power, just go with the .308 round versus the inferior 7.62 x 39 round. Of course I wish I had an AK, because of the durability everyone talks about.

Sold my SKS to finance P-Mags and .223 ammo for my AR.

I could care less about tacticool (I have a 20" A2 style) but I wanted the commonality and standardization only our current-issue battle rifle could provide...in the very slight chance I actually needed the rifle to do what it was designed for.

Ok before I start I would like to say that I have a love of both the AK & AR. If I had to pick I would say the AR because I've taken it to war and it never let me down (except for 1 bad mag, not the guns fault) I am not taking anything away from the AK and as long as the AR is kept relatively clean it is super reliable and very accurate. I know some AK's are accurate enough but on average the AR will out shoot the AK. If one of the stipulations were that there would be no cleaning supplies would be available I might change my decision but as long as I even had baby wipes available I would probably still keep the AR.

I have my converted saiga and like it a lot.
The AR push button mag release is nice. I have shot plenty of AR-15s and M16A2s they are good. But I am use to the rock and lock from having my mini14 since I was 15.
I prefer the lack of parts on AKs and M14 style guns.
If you want a 223 you can shoot all day get a saiga in 223 if you have to have last round bolt hold open get a mini14. The only time I had malfunctions in my mini14 was with low powered reloads or when I tried some bargin made in china mags, Ruger factory mags are best and ProMags are just as good far as I can tell.

JOJO, I own an AR-15 Bushmaster and love it. easy to use and shoots sexy. I have shot the AK as well. You need to have both for your collection and you can't go wrong. Both are great shooting and fun. Depends which hat you want to wear that day. AR if your dressing for success, AK if you are going to get down and dirty.

Trained with the M-16A1 and M-16A2, I own a Mak/90 I will stick with my AK, It just keeps shooting, I just read up on a shoot out in Colo. The Deputy put 5rds into the Kid, but he was still able to shoot himself with his handgun. I like the 30cal bullet for first hit kill's over the 223. AK would always be my choice!!

AK. Don't get me wrong, I prefer ARs, but it was an EO that put a stop to Norincos being imported and 922r. Its going to tkae an act of congress to put a stop to ARs.

Considering the current political climate, get both.

these threads should be ak vs. mini.

similar levels of precision, tolerances, and accuracy.
AK. Every time.

i have used an AR for the last 9 years, 3 of them deployed overseas. ive seen people shot by both. i own an AK. my buddies all own ARs. i would like to get an AR, will probably build my own. not sure if i will get rid of the AK to do it though.

the accuracy in my ak is good enough for anything i will ever do with it. i can shoot as good as most people with basic military training and their ar.
i believe a good shooter with a crappy rifle is more dangerous than a crappy shooter with a good rifle. pick whichever you want but train with it.
