Does anybody know any reason why my UTG detachable carry handle won't adjust for elevation in either direction? Is there a detent or perhaps a first use procedure I've missed that would free the elevation dial so I can adjust the zero on my rifle?

It has about a millimeter of play in either direction but won't budge past that, or click to a new adjustment.

What brand detachable handles do the military use anyway?

Please help, and thank you.

Well UTG is a cheap knockoff but still should work. Are you saying you're adjusting for elevation by turning the wheel or it won't adjust for windage with the knob on the right? Anyway it may need lubrication to get past the stiffness.

Actually you adjust elevation for initial zero with the front sight. You adjust for long range with the carry handle elevation wheel.

Military models are manufactured by various forges then finished by the names you've heard like Colt and FN. Quality milspec height models also are sold by other companies like S&W, BCM, Sabre, Daniel Defense and others.

Yeah, you dont sight in the rifle with the rear elevation adjustamnet. Use the front sight post for verticle edjustment.

Military carry handles are biult by Colt or FN, depending on which rifle/carbine you have.

The Chinese carry handles tend to be cheap knockoffs. It may be that you just need to push harder, or it may be that yours is locked up somehow. Look for a screw at top or bottom that could be loosened to let it adjust.

This.

Not to derail the thread or anything but I have been active duty for the last 10 years and have yet to see a detachable carry handle on an issued M4.

The carry handles out there may be mil-spec to an A2 rifle, but just because I have never seen it doesn't mean it does not exist...

The thumbwheel for elevation is made in 2 parts. They are held together with a set screw. It most likely came loose.

No doubt there are a lot of A4 carry handles from M4s and M16A4s but maybe more so in the 1990s. A lot of "pulled off" CHs end up for sale, even on eBay, and some are from Colts. Hard to be sure if they came off military models or commercial ARs but I've picked up a few in the $30-45 range that are milspec height and have quality forge marks like Cardinal, Cerro and Anchor Harvey. I had to be careful when selecting since you also see A2/commercial height and Chinese knockoffs.

Don't know how the military controls/inventories pulled off carry handles but it seems a good share go home with someone.

Thanks for quick replies. I was trying to use the elevation wheel to zero, instead of the front post. I'll try that first.
