Hey guys, I've got an AR that I'd like to put a 3.5-10x40mm 30mm tube VX-3 on for coyotes. Where's a guy to start? High? Extra high? Risers?

For me to get decent cheek weld i need x-high or higher mounts on ars. Ive actually developed a fondness for the weaver quadlock see thrus. Those are the right height for me, but arnt quite as sturdy (seeming) as id want for a big heavy scope.
But were i going to use the gun for more precision work, id go with a decent one piece offset mount. Those are usually just about perfect for me.

Again its gonna be where your eye position is with the rifle shouldered, that dictates mount height on an ar.

What ever will get you at least 1 1/2 inch off the Picatinny rail.

A one piece such as the RRA or Aero Precision (lightweight) should put you right there.

Thanks guys. I'm more accustomed to bolt rifles and AR optics are a complete 180°.

1.5 inch is pretty standard. I have one AR with about 1.375 rings on it and no complaints there either for me fwiw. Any lower and it might be a bit scrunched getting on the scope.

Measuring from the rail to the centerline of the peep is roughly 1.5", so that sounds about right.

One of the things that confused me about AR optics is how the A2 front sight / gas block (assuming your AR has one) doesn't obstruct the scope field of view. You'd never know it by looking at how that scope mounts using that Leupold mount, but it doesn't.

A lot of things confuse me though o_O

You do not see the front sight because of the way optics work and the focal length of the scope. The front fixed sight is so close to the scope it is way out of focus to the point it is essentially invisible. The light rays just bend around the sight.

If you look closely under the right conditions, you would probably see a shadow.

Also, if the sight was bigger, it would show up more.

It's weird but I like it. AE 55gr FMJ at 100 yards seemed to do well enough.

If the AE ammunition works, why not.

My best ever Service Rifle match score (100 yard reduce coarse of fire that day) is with 55 FMJ hand loaded ammunition. (That might tell you how bad a shot I was when competing.:))

It really depends on your complexity and ergonomics. I would get the scope first and get the ergonomics worked out.
After this you measure where the scope needs to go for your comfort.
It has to work that when you open your eyes your sight picture should be there.
Then last thing is to order the mount/rings that puts your optics in that position you need.

Think of it like going to a tailor. The tailor makes the suit to fit you and not the other way around.

Once you know the precise spot, the nice thing is lots of options where to choose from.

I know one size doesn't fit all, but the AR specific cantilever mounts seem to have got the scope height right for most.

My issue has been eye relief. I generally can find a decent compromise on bolt guns that will work for most positions I use. For some reason I struggle with my AR's in that if I set it up for one shooting position nothing else is right. The alternative is a compromise where nothing is exactly right. I just put an adjustable stock on my service rifle in the hope I can set it up for prone (I'm a stock crawler) and adjust it closer for the other positions.

Good luck!

This scope is certainly more than I need on this rifle, ideally a fixed 4 or 6 power, but for now this will suffice.
