Hey pallies. I have an AR-15 in-bound to my FFL. When I have the relevant information (e.g., serial number, etc.), I'm going to get an eFormed Form 1 in the pipe line.

Question: Any recommendation on a shorty upper once this approved? Thoughts on the Kitty Kat upper?

Thanks much.

You can probably get something similar or better for cheaper by watching Palmetto State Armory.

OK. What are some examples that are "better for cheaper" that I should look out for? Thanks.

I had a Kitty Kat upper for a while. Excellent quality and surprisingly accurate. LOUD with the 5.56 round, but superb with a .22LR conversion installed.

@ Elkins45, thanks for the link.

@ RCArms.com, thanks for the feedback.

The PSA upper is cheaper. Probably not better though. Ive bought a bunch of stuff from them and their Quality Control is pretty much non existent. They just got a 11 1/2" upper sent back to fix the canted sight they shipped it with.

If it were my money I'd go with the DPMS or some other quality upper .

Would be a good time to build an upper. Buy a barrel with the barrel extension already on it, a stripped upper, BCG & charging handle and pick out a rail. It's pretty easy to install a lo pro gas block. Plenty of videos on it.

The way I see it, I'm going to swap the rail, BCG & charging handle anyways so why not save some money and start from scratch.

I could build one, but I just don't have much interest in doing so, so I'd rather stick with a ready to roll upper.

I have 100% reliability of of my 10.5" 5.56 upper and 100% reliability out of my 7" 300 BO upper even with subsonics. The 7.5" 5.56 upper I used to have in 5.56 is a "used to have" for a reason.

I've built 7.5" 5.56 uppers and a 6.5" 5.56 upper both ran just fine. Just depends on who builds it. Especially these days with adjustable gas blocks it makes it even easier to fine tune the cycling. Ballistically though, longer the better.

I did a bit more digging today and found a number of interesting options.

Tangential question: Does anyone make a very short upper (7½ to 10"), with M16A1 style handguard,* that is ready to slap on a lower?

Model 1 Sales, has some intriguing uppers, including a triangular handguard option, here. I'm pretty sure I want to Form 1 this one, but, still, this looks interesting as a Title I affair ...

Thanks all. After doing a bit more digging, I'm going to go with a 10.5" barrel on this one. I got the Form 1 into the ATF, so playing the waiting game now, but can keep the research rolling until it is approved. My Spidey Senses tell me this one is going to be a long wait. But, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
