AR-15 Suppressor

Lots of good information - thank you. It sounds like some trial and error work so I expect to be asking more questions. I am planning to start with a .30 caliber can with the hope of it being usable on more than one gun.

The AR’s were my first thought since they are already threaded but I have bolt guns in sub-.30 calibers that I am planning to have threaded as well. Does a Howa bolt .223 require any modifications or is it a matter of add the suppressor and go shoot it (obviously checking ‘zero’)?

A secondary plan is to assemble an AR-9 which is a ‘blowback’ action - would it require a buffer change to alternate between suppressed and unsuppressed operation?

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I use a 30cal silencer on a 5.56. It works fine, just longer, fatter and nearly double the weight of an actual 5.56/223 silencer.

That would really depend on the manufacturer. Both the SF SOCOM762 and 556 are 1.5" in diameter. While the 762 is 2" longer it only weighs 4 ounces more. I'd really have to look around to find a 30 cal can that weighs "nearly double" a 5.56 can from the same manufacturer.

Eh, looked up one more. Dead Air Sierra-5 is 1.5" diameter just like the Sandman series and is 6.27" long. With the Keymo adapter it weighs in at 15.4 ounces.

Compared to the Sandman S at 1.5" diameter and 6.4" long weighing in at 17.7 ounces.

Not huge differences although you can direct thread the Sierra-5 and shave off weight and length.

Yeah I left a lot open on that post. I'm looking for direct thread, user serviceable, no need for "fullauto rated", fairly light and doesn't break the bank. Those are my ideal ones.
When looking at lighter weight, direct thread 5.56 silencers they usually were 1.375 inches wide.
If you want one that pairs to a flash hider or full auto rated I think you pretty much have to get a 1.5 inch one. But I wasn't looking at those so much as they were big, heavy, expensive.

The only one I have that's full auto rated is a "xm177 moderator" it's about an inch wide, 4.2 long and weighs maybe 6oz. Noise reduction is 10 to 15db.
