I recently purchased an AR rifle. Used but a little. S&W lower & a Rock River upper.
24" ss bull barrel.
I was hoping to get an accurate rifle to have fun with, shooting targets at 100 ~ 300 yds. All testing done at 100 yds.
I started out with some Wal Mart Remmy 55 gr FMJ factory ammo & some Win 55 gr frangible ammo. Groups ran from 2 1/2" with the Remmy to 4 + + with the Winny. :( Then some Midway dogtown 55gr bullets handloaded. Same 2~ 3" groups. :uhoh: Naw, they were more like patterns.
So I bought a box of Federal Gold medal match ammo. 69 gr Sierra HPBT bullet. The groups went to just below an inch. :)
Then I loaded my OWN ammo. Sierra 69 gr. HPBT match bullets. LC brass. win primer, RL 15 powder. I started out with the Sierra loading manual starting load & worked up to max, .3 gr at a time.
All of the loads I made were equal to or better than the Fed GMM. The worst of my loads was 0.875", the best was 0.36", then 0.435" then 0.465". All 5 rd groups. HOO boy! was I pleased. I went from patterns to nice groups, better than I had hoped for. Without any load workup, various powders, primers, etc etc.
This with a gas gun, no modifications, nothing special.
All groups shot with an Barska scope, Harris bipod & a rear bag. Actually my first attempt at using a rear bag too.
Impressed, I am. Pleased, I am.
I almost worry that my next range visit will not be as successful & ruin my run of good groups.
Darn, some of them AR rifles is acccccccuratttttte.

I've had similar results to yours. Best group was last weekend shooting 53 grain Sierra Match Kings with H335 out of my Armalite 20 inch upper....chrome lined, not free floated, Harris bipod, Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10X....four shots touching with one flyer at 100 yds. Handloads are great.

What's the twist rate on your gun? The faster twist rates (eg, 1:7) don't do as well with light bullets. Good to hear your reloads are better than factory, I'm considering reloading as the heavier factory rounds start getting damn expensive.:banghead:

My twist rate is 1:9 and does well with 53 and 55 grain match bullets. Honestly, I've never fired 68 with this upper, and I've never fired 53s with my 1:7 upper, so I cannot comment on the twist rate lore. I'm pretty sure 55s will shoot fine in a 1:7. You can read threads regarding this until your head explodes :)

The good groups don't surprise me a bit. RRA claims 3/4 MOA for their SS barreled guns and in my experience with several they don't have any problem delivering on that. You just have use ammo that is capable of similar accuracy.

the 24" is more tricky at first. All things being equal a shorter barrel is a more accurate than a long one but then you sacrificed some speed.
They can be very accurate but the long barrels are more picky. (less accuracy nodes) but once you get the right loads and you hit the nodes then they are amazing like any good AR.
Congrats on those 69smks. Those little bullets are as good as it gets.
Try the Hornady 68s and 75's both HPBT and Amax. they shoot like the house is on fire.

PatM 1:9 is good to 70grs so it will love the 69smk. Will not shoot 70grs solids (ie TSX ) since they are much longer to meet the grain. They have to be, there is no lead.

I am trying to locate some 110gr liberty's to continue the fun factor.

Cheers.
E.

I guess 1stM answered my question. I just don't get how decent manufacture loads were that bad at 100 yards. But I don't have anything over 20" barrel. Surprises me. my 16's and 20's seem to all shoot very well at 100 yards with most decent ammo, hand loaded or not. Interesting.

OhioChief,
If you have any question about any commercial load I have run many of the popular ones by the chrono and several type of AR barrels send me a PM.

The 55gr FMJ bullets I've seen are terrible as far as base consistency goes. They never do as well as BTHP bullets in any of my rifles.

NATO rounds 193 and 885 are very consistent with a good AR.
for example LC, Priv and Dag are very accurate on the M4 and socom type.
