I recently purchased an AR rifle. Used but a little. S&W lower & a Rock River upper.
24" ss bull barrel.
I was hoping to get an accurate rifle to have fun with, shooting targets at 100 ~ 300 yds. All testing done at 100 yds.
I started out with some Wal Mart Remmy 55 gr FMJ factory ammo & some Win 55 gr frangible ammo. Groups ran from 2 1/2" with the Remmy to 4 + + with the Winny. Then some Midway dogtown 55gr bullets handloaded. Same 2~ 3" groups. Naw, they were more like patterns.
So I bought a box of Federal Gold medal match ammo. 69 gr Sierra HPBT bullet. The groups went to just below an inch.
Then I loaded my OWN ammo. Sierra 69 gr. HPBT match bullets. LC brass. win primer, RL 15 powder. I started out with the Sierra loading manual starting load & worked up to max, .3 gr at a time.
All of the loads I made were equal to or better than the Fed GMM. The worst of my loads was 0.875", the best was 0.36", then 0.435" then 0.465". All 5 rd groups. HOO boy! was I pleased. I went from patterns to nice groups, better than I had hoped for. Without any load workup, various powders, primers, etc etc.
This with a gas gun, no modifications, nothing special.
All groups shot with an Barska scope, Harris bipod & a rear bag. Actually my first attempt at using a rear bag too.
Impressed, I am. Pleased, I am.
I almost worry that my next range visit will not be as successful & ruin my run of good groups.
Darn, some of them AR rifles is acccccccuratttttte.
