I have an AR with the traditional triangular front sight (A2). The upper itself is a flattop with pic rail with a flip up Magpul rear sight.

I am considering getting a Trijicon Reflex. What type of riser will I need to be able to use the Reflex effectively without the front sight getting in the way? I suppose the dot from the Reflex should match the front sight post.

Not sure if I should do an absolute cowitness setup or a 1/3 cowitness setup.... The AR is 9mm NFA SBR so CQB is the priority over long range.

Focus on the target w/both eyes open and you won't even notice the front sight base. This applies to Aimpoints, Eotechs, Trijicons, etc.
Btw, I've used numerous Trijicons and if you're going to go the tritium/fiber optic route I suggest you check out the Meprolight M21 w/12.5moa triangle reticle (numerous reticles available but I found the triangle to provide the best combination of both speed & precision), the M21's have sharper reticles (won't bloom/distort in bright sunlight) and are more resistant to reticle washout (like when aiming from a dark room out a window into bright sunlight).

I've always been of the opinion that for fixed sights, 1/3 co-witness seems to work well but for folding sights I prefer absolute.

Even with irons, if the dot is centered on the front post (absolute) you barely notice it as everything will be aligned properly.

As for riser heights you have 1.0" (25.4) 1/3 co-witness, .83" (21mm) absolute co-witness, and .50" (12.7mm) generally. Different scopes can sometimes affect which will be which with any particular setup.

I just returned a Trijicon Reflex to the seller because I found the dot to be too dim when the lighting was low or near dark.

I am sticking with Aimpoints.

1/3rd co-witness for sure.

I use only Larue mounts. I'd rather save up for the Aimpoint or Eotech. Nothing worng with the older Comp M3 Aimpoints if you're on a budget. In fact the older models were better at longer ranges IMO.

I'd recommend absolute co-witness with either folding or fixed sights. That way you maintain some consistency of head placement.

For your stated CQB use, I'd recommend you take a look at the EOTech lineup. You don't give up any accuracy with the center dot compared to other red dot sights, but you'll gain a lot of engagement speed with the 65 MOA ring around it

Thanks for the replies. I have already ordered a Trijicon Reflex sight with 6.5moa. A friend of mine just got back from overseas military tour and he talked me into that one.

What he said. I've got an Eotech and find that even with the dot off, the window of the sight itself works well enough as a large rear peep to bounce milk jugs at 100 yards.

Not as accurate as a BUIS, but better than nothing.....

The Reflex is a very trouble free robust sight but it won't be very good for precise work like varmint shooting IMO, the EOtech and its one minute dot shines in that department.
