As a recent purchaser of an AR, I have learned alot. But while assisting someone else in their purchase, it occured to me that maybe we can help people out. I propose a thread that we all send in pictures of our setup, detailed, accurate explaination of it's features, and why you find them desirable. I see alot of the questions that I was asking pre-purchase, asked here over and over. I was just as guilty. Maybe this will save some bandwidth, and lots of extra threads..

Mine is a Rock River lower, with a 16" Colt H-bar flat top upper. It has an Eotech 512 holographic sight. The stock and grip are Magpul MOE series, with the AA battery holder core in the grip, for extra sight batteries. The fore end is a Houge overmold, rifle length free float tube. This requires a low profile gas block, instead of the typical front sight. And in this picture there is also a Harris bipod mounted on the front sling swivel.

Hey, I'll show mine off. I won't even pretend that I know what other people may need, because quite frankly I picked a bunch of my stuff because I thought it looked cool.

more pictures and my build log available in this thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=658110

34g22ba.jpg

Armalite stripped lower receiver - Quality name and it is what my LGS had.
Palmetto State Armory LPK - hear good things about their trigger
Magpul MOE grip - Has storage space, nice and rough texture
Magpul enhanced (aluminium) trigger guard - looks cool...I like metal.
PSA Mil-spec receiver extension, H buffer, spring and base plate - PSA is supposed to be good quality, Mil-Spec has more stock options, H buffer because I am sure I am over gassed. Might even want to step up to H2 or H3
Colt steel receiver extension lock ring - All I could find in stock and I wanted steel.
Magpul ACS stock - nice cheek weld, storage, and friction lock
VLTOR BCM gunfighter charging handle, with small catch - all the rage on the message boards
PSA dust cover and DPMS forward assist - only I could find in stock
Daniel Defense stripped upper receiver - good price, good name, I wanted one with the forward assist and dust cover already attached, but never in stock.
Daniel Defense Bolt carrier assembly and bolt - DD and BCM are the two most highly recommended affordable high quality BCGs. With all the other DD equipment I had, I wanted the DD bolt.
Daniel Defense 16" 1:7" twist Cold hammer forged M4 contour barrel - It was either this, BCM or PSA...and this was what was in stock. I wanted the M4 contour because it looks cool
Daniel Defense low profile gas block - Like the name, and I didn't want a front sight block to get in the way of optics.
Yankee Hill Machine black gas tube - looks cool, only one in stock when I was ordering.
Yankee Hill Machine Phantom 5C2 Flash hider - looks cool, cheap, good quality
Midwest Industries 10" free float quad rail - wanted flip up sights, did not what gas block visible, did not want front sight block, this was affordable and good quality

I'm not trying to tell people what they need. But something like the lo-pro gas block were things that I wanted, but didn't know I wanted. With pictures, and descriptions, maybe folks can get a better idea of what they really want.

AR pron thread?

I'm in!

DPMS-m4gery-large.jpg

DPMS "complete" lower (without buffer tube) from some outfit on Gunbroker because I had money
burning a hole in my pocket, and this seemed like a good idea at the time.
I like it because it works, and it annoys all the people who say DPMS is "second tier."
Raw factory trigger. Wouldn't mind having a $300 trigger in it, but that can wait.
Plus, its a fine example of just how BAD an AR15 trigger really can be.

Magpul CTR buttstock without the rubber buttpad because it was $10 cheaper at the gun show than
the one with the rubber pad, and I didn't know any better at the time. Actually, I have the version
with the rubber pad on another rifle. Neither seems to make any difference one way or the other to
me. I like the way it locks, and I like the loops for attaching slings the way I want.

DSA ZM4 A3 upper with Magpul carbine-length handguards I bought from a Camp Perry vendor added later.
Got the DSA because they were the first to actually get their production rolling in 2009
after OFIRA (Obama Firearms Industry Relief Act) took effect. Price shipped was $288.18 - which was not bad
considering the gouging that was going on at the time.
I replaced the conventional handguards with Magpul handguards because they look way-cool,
and the 7-slot Magpul rail-segment for the flashlight mounts neatly to the Magpul handguard.

DSA buffer tube kit with buffer and spring, because they had it in the case at the LGS, and I figured I'd give them some business.

Bolt carrier that one of my shooting buddy's left at my house, and forgot about, so I put it to good
use. Bolt that I pulled out of a pile of "just in case" spare parts in one of my boxes of "just in case"
stuff.

Standard pistol grip because I've been shooting standard grips since 1989, and I'm not about to make
a change now.

Standard trigger guard because my fingers are not so fat that the standard guard is an issue for me.

Standard front sight because the USGI sight is tough as nails, and because float tubes, and expensive
gas blocks, and screw-on front sights just add needless expense to this sort of rifle.

Gun-show "Z-5" (Spanish-made I think) rail-mount flashlight because I'm too cheap to buy a Surefire, and the thing
seems to work pretty darn well so far. I haven't chucked it in the river yet to see if that will kill it.

EOTECH 512
sight because it gets the job done without costing as much as the latest-greatest
AIMPOINT or Trijicon wonder-sight. Plus, I got it "for free" with my Cabela's credit card points.

Magpul 2nd generation rear sight because it has TWO apertures (big/small) and is lightweight and
low-profile.

Bravo Company charging handle, because this is one of the truly useful design improvements for
the AR15. Without question, the "better mousetrap."
One of those things where you go "Wow, how have I done without one of these?!!!"
Medium-size because I don't like my porridge too hot or too cold.

Viking Tactics 2-point sling, because it works, and because I hate single-point nut-racker slings. The
HK hooks let me take it on-and-off the rifle without having to solve a chinese puzzle each time.
Para-cord attachments to the front swivel and the stock because it reduces the click-clatter of hard
attachments.

TAPCO USGI mags, because every good SHTF rifle-on-a-pistol-range rifle should have SOMETHING
from TAPCO on it even if it is just a magazine floorplate.

Remington R-25
added a G-Trigg adjustable 4 lb trigger Laser Genetics ND3 and Vortex Crossfire II 3-9 with an illuminated reticle. I am going to thread the barrel one of these days.

This is my frankenrifle. I'll try to remember what I have in it.

1. Levang linear compensator

2. Some flavor of rifle length freefloat tube. I really don't remember where I got it. It was in my parts bin.

3. Bravo Company 14.5" barrel with carbine length gas

4. Daniel Defense upper receiver

5. Daniel Defense bolt carrier (I think) with a BCM bolt

6. ACOG TA44S-10 in an American Defense QD mount

7. Magpul UBR stock

8. Spike's Tactical lower receiver and ST-T2 tungsten buffer with Magpul grip

9. Geiselle SSA-E trigger group

Hey, W.E.G., I like the "D" and "R" on you EoTech. Nowadays my worn out eyeballs have a hard time with making out the factory markings...and I can never remember which way is which. I am going to copy that stroke of genius!

100_1808.jpg

Upper is PSA CHF 16" Middy because FN makes a fine hard use barrel.
Lower is PSA MOE kit with GI trigger etc.
Bolt/Carrier is PSA milspec. FA carrier and HP/MP bolt. No problems so far but I may rob this for a FNMI A2 upper Im building and adding a BCM.

Vltor/BCM Mod4 charging handle because I feel its more solid.

Magpul furniture because I dont need rails. Stock is Magpul ACS-L. Its light, has good cheekweld and has small storage door for Eotech batteries. I store small oil bottle and some foam earplugs is the grip.

Irons- Magpul rear, fixed front. I prefer fixed front as a fail-safe. MBUIS are good enough for BU rear.

Eotech XPS 2-0 for optic. I prefer Eotech reticle. I can rangefind with it at distances. Very few problems reported with transverse battery mount.

-Testing items on now. All items seem so far so good but not tested for long yet.-

ST Dynacomp- works well for price. Comparable results of Battlecomp IMO.
ST T2 Buffer- no reported issues over standard cabine. Perceived to slow action slightly.
BAD Lever- has yet to cause a malfunction. I seem to like it so far.

Silver art-marker.

Seems unaffected by water, but wipes off completely with any oily product.
Discovered that after my unsteady hand botched the job a few times until I finally got it mostly "right."

Larue will sell you a fancier product.

I already had the art-marker, and didn't even have to pay postage.

Not much to talk about on my end. It's just an A2 clone made by ArmaLite.
I like to keep things simple.

SAM_1068.jpg

I am thinking of getting some old school triangular handguards for 2 reasons:
1 - They look cool
2 - I like the ergonomics better than anything else I've ever felt.

Charles Daily lower. BCM upper. Magpul furniture. Troy Battle Sight. Red Dot. ST-T2 buffer.

Set up for primarily for shorter range use, but a 200+ yard shot would not be out of the question. Popping an 18" wide plate at 300 yards with good ammo is not overly difficult.

Eventually going to get rid of my current upper and SBR it but that is down the road a bit

My other AR...

IMG_0127.jpg

Armalite AR10
Magpul PRS stock
Armalite national match trigger
Troy TRX free float rail
Burris PEPR mount
Burris scope (going to replace with SWFA 10x)
Harris bipod w/LaRue QD mount (not pictured)

My anachronistic carbine.... its a freakish mutt!

The lower:
A roggio arsenal lower that I came upon before realizing who/what they were... This one is just fine luckily for me.
The lower is equipped with an a2 buffer tube filled with a chrome moly buffer spring and standard a2 buffer, and the trigger is an ALG combat mated to a colt reversable safety (currently on the right side for my convience) and rounded out with the piviot pins and such from a normal LPK
It is stocked with an Oiled walnut butt and pistol grip.

The Upper:
The core upper is a YHM flat top
the barrel is a Stainless 16in Middy WOA barrel in .223 wylde, and the BCG is WOA with the bolt matched to the barrel. The barrel is fitted with a brownells branded compenstator.
The free float tube is a midwest industries SS15 Gen 2, and the fore grip is a modifed m1928 thompson replica refinished as best I could to match the stocks and mated to a rail riser.
The sights are fixed troy battle sights.

The sling is a 2007 dated m1907 mil surplus sling on quick detach swivels.

It looks heavier then it is, doesnt kick, is easy to shoot, and everyone Ive had shoot it loves it.

Not bad considering this was my first AR and never really intended to have one until I was offered the lower and just said "what the heck, why not?"

And a pic before the sling of the other side:

Boy that is a funky looking critter. I like it though. Don't see them Eagles much anymore either. Thanks to everyone that has stuck to the spirit of the original post, pics and a description. There are some nice looking weapons out there. Hope we can help someone pick the part they want on their gun. I know there are a few that have given me some ideas for mine down the road.
