Siting in a tree stand or hunting from your ruck..why bother?

Not everyone is able-bodied enough for any other type of hunting, I'm sure you don't believe they should all just give up and stick to bank fishing.

I have not had good experiences with the .308 AR. My first was a DPMS TAC20 that was way too heavy for a field rifle. Later I built a custom DPMS pattern with a Criterion barrel and never could get it to run reliably. It frequently failed to eject. My latest foray was with a S&W M&P 10. It was undergassed from the factory, requiring the gas port to be drilled out in order to run. Then the barrel split during a competition. Turns out S&W doesn't sell spare parts for any of their rifles, so I was stuck dealing with their customer service department, which has been a nightmare. Long story short, the rifle broke last September, and I still don't have it fixed. It will definitely be getting sold one way or another -- either repaired, or for parts.

I have been through other pattern 7.62x51 battle rifles, and all leave something to be desired for my purposes.

My solution has been to build a 6.8 SPC AR. It is so nice to be able to build on the standardized, cheap, widely available, and lighter weight AR-15 pattern. It also avoids the issue of the longer upper receiver of the .308 AR, and the resulting too long LOP. We'll see how the 6.8 works out after I get a chance to take it hunting and put it through its paces at some Run 'n Gun events.

I might miss cheap surplus ammo... but then again I might not. I just bought S&B 6.8 FMJ for $0.60/round. That's the same as what I last paid for 7.6x51 surplus.

Not everyone subscribes to the Couch Potato School of Shooting and Hunting. Some of us actually carry our rifles afield, rather than simply riding our V8 powered couch to where we will hunt. I prefer to keep my hunting rifles as light as practical
v8 powered couch rotflmao. +2 to you

Why is it that every time one of these threads pop up we seem to get fixated on weight? * * *

Well, two reasons at least. :scrutiny:

First, a 308/7.62 on the AR platform will always be heavier than its .223/5.56 counterpart which most people now looking at the .308 version already own and shoot, and are therefore accustom its comparative lightness ...

... and the second, unfortunately, is that when the word "gym" gets mentioned, a good number of these same dudes think you're referring to their neighbor, Jim, not the athletic facility where they could go to get stronger and in generally better shape.

Ever check the physiques of some of the guys who only shoot off a bench? ... Think: steady diet of Wendy's Triples & extra frosty shakes :neener:

When at the range I usually park the truck about 10 yards or less from the bench and while its tough I usually make it that far. * * *

Obviously you're an in-shape Spartan-esq dude who runs and trains regularly, like me.

Back on topic, ... certainly one contender for the OP to consider in a top tier 7.62 AR would be LMT's MRP models, either the MWS, which the Brits adopted as their battle rifle, or the slightly-lighter weight LM8, the so-called "slick-side" model.

My "featherweight" LM8:
