Sorry I'm late to this one.

krochus, you are a lucky man to even have a 278 yard line of sight shot in Arkansas that wasn't in the middle of a rice or soybean field. ;P

You'd be surprised at how long shots could be hunting the cattle land along the western border south of 40. Not like back east where it's either rice field or wooded swamp

Aside from my general ugliness I was very very winded from dragging the carcass through a clearcut. Which contrary to it's name isn't "clear" at all.

yeah I know I'm out of shape

I wouldn't be surprised, but back east is all I got. :)

NICE!!!

DAMN! That is some good shooting! If I am not mistaken, doesn't the 7.62X39 have about the same ballistics as a 5.56mm? That is what I have heard since there isn't as much powder as in a 7.62X51. Correct me if I am wrong, though.

This just proves that it doesn't really matter what caliber you use, just personal skill with the rifle. NICE SHOT!! Right in the "kill zone." That is the deer's expression right after it was hit! LOL

Correct me if I am wrong, though.

You are quite wrong. 5.56 is very flat shooting. The 7.62x51 is the same as a .308 Win. A 7.62x39 is similar ballistically to a .30-30.

I saw a .223 used at almost 400 yards in a new bolt action rifle, that doe leaped almost 10 ft straight up into the trees, then fell dead on the spot.
Nice shot, and nice rifle.

Blimey, this gives me hope. I would not have tried to hit a bus(empty of course) side on with my mini 30 at that range. Wait till I get back out there,:)

This is my CZ 527 Carbine cal 7,62x39:
I like it because it is very lightweight and small

- Homemade cheek plate
- BR-silencer
- first 6x42 swarovski but then 12x42 S&B

I can post shooting pics if anyone want..

u must have sprayed and prayed cuz no way an 7.62x39mm has that much power to kill a deer out close to 300 yards....i figured you had ot aim like 2 feet above the deer i call it a lucky shot i wonder if a .223 rem can do the job also cuz they have better distance then a 7.62x39mm..

So I take it you read absolutely none of the original post huh:rolleyes:

you sure bout that buddy

300yd energy for 55grn .223 -520 ft lbs
300yd energy for my 7.62x39 handload -861 ft lbs

OH by the way some more of this deer is simmering on the stove as I type so I'm pretty sure 7.62x39 did have enough power to kill a deer " out close to 300 yards"
