When I moved to the DC area about twelve years ago I picked MD because at the time VA had a very expensive annual car tax, and I owned several expensive, mostly newer vehicles. I also thought commuting from MD would be easier than crossing the Potomac from VA. What a mistake! The five years I spent in MD convinced me to really research an area before choosing your jurisdiction. Guns in MD? No private sales. One handgun a month. No >20 round magazines sold in state. Waiting periods. That stuff wasn't too bad, and the shows were great, but, most important, few gun shops and practically no place to shoot! Local zoning made it next to impossible to open a store or range. I closely followed all the twists and turns over the years in a local shop's efforts to move to a larger location and open an indoor range. It took many, many years and many, many dollars. I finally left the area in the aftermath of 9/11, and was amazed at how much easier life and guns can be in a place like my current state.
