I'm buying probably more overall this year than last, mostly because it was so hard to find ammo last year. 9mm and .45 have been especially tough, even now they are still sometimes sold out.
I think what last year taught me was to plan ahead more. Used to be that I could stop off on the way to the range and get whatever I wanted, and however much I wanted. With plans for a range outing coming up later this month, I've been stopping into random places to look and buy up. I've even started to amass a little 22LR stash, so I can be sure I'll have enough to plink when I want, if nothing else.
For example, just last week I stopped into Walmart and got a brick of Federal .22LR, 100 rounds of Remington .223 (for my new Remmy 700 SPS Tactical!
), and 50 rounds of Federal .45. This left plenty for other shooters.
As I was walking up to the ammo case, though, a younger guy was asking for 6 boxes of 9mm WWB 100 round value packs, and 6 boxes of 45ACP WWB (100 round value packs - all the rest of the WWB 45ACP that they had). Then his first credit card didn't work, so he gave them another - and mentioned something about where he's from, ammo is much more expensive, so he's stocking up.
I can't blame the guy for stocking up, I mean the ammo was there to purchase. But, there was a sign on the case indicating ammo purchases are limited to 6 boxes per customer...I guess that meant per caliber or something? I ended up buying 7 boxes - five 20 round .223, 1 22LR brick, 1 box 45ACP. Maybe the guy didn't care how much people bought, I dunno. But at least I left plenty for others, and took only what I was intending to shoot.
