Mods, appologies if this is a duplicate but I hadn't heard much chatter about this.

Arizona Senate Bill 1214

Proposed bill OKs guns in schools Proposal would allow permit holders to carry

Individuals with a concealed-weapons permit would be allowed to bring their guns onto school grounds under a measure introduced Friday at the Arizona Legislature.

The proposal, Senate Bill 1214, would exempt concealed-carry permit holders from a state law that bars individuals from knowingly carrying deadly weapons onto school property. If it becomes law, the measure would allow teachers and anyone else with a valid permit to carry their weapon onto the grounds of any public or private K-12 school, college or university in the state.

Oh, Happy Day! Perhaps the senseless killings will not all be in vain. There may yet be some good come out of the tragedies that have taken place at our schools.

That is freakin' awesome!

The naysayers, of course, will scream about blood in streets (hallways). And once again, logic and reality will prove them wrong.

The good thing is most of them don't live in Arizona anyway :)

Good luck with this one. I hope Texas is next when the Legislature meets again in January.

Our governor has said he thinks school carry should be legal, so we have hopes.

Arizona students, family members, and general residents need to be writing/calling BIG TIME around this... Call the university folks, and ask them to support this, so your "family members will be safe."

Guys, imagine if we get academia used to thinking of a carried gun as just the equivalent of a fire extinguisher. We NEED to do this, so that the next time some nutjob decides to go whacko, he'll shoot up some other place...

Outstanding

...

Music to my ears..

Another BIG reason that our final life-move and OUT of Kamifornia to, most likely, Arizona..

Common Sense "lives" still, along with, sense of "hope"

If this passes, and when it works, and there are no CCWer shooting sprees, perhaps it will show other states the truth, just like CCW has been spreading due to the lack of "road rage" and "petty argument" killings that the antis wrongfully predicted.

It's already legal in Utah, with no problems, so they're not the first. I hope that our sister state's example will be pulled into the argument.

Okay. You guys are making positive noises. Now, quit celebrating and slapping each other on the back. That was just the second quarter.

Now's the time that you need to write/call college/university administrators and faculty, and also talk to friends and neighbors to do the same. Keep up the pressure, and not just in one state.

We need to stay focused.

(easy enough for me to say... oooh... there's a shiny!)

I live in Tucson and I am a student here at the UA. I've written to my state legislators on this issue, and I'm encouraging my friends to do the same.

All AZ administrators and police chiefs have come out strongly against this bill. We had a police chief basically say, "Well, if someone were to use a CCW in self-defense, at a school, our officers would shoot them, so this shouldn't pass."

I don't think they are going to cave. It's the legislators that are going to make this decision, and they are the ones that need to be leaned on. I would go for an organized informational campaign on the administrators/provosts of the university secondary to the state legislators.

You're correct...

See here, U of I president in Moscow Idaho

White: allowing guns on campus is 'unacceptable'

http://www.klewtv.com/news/local/15681457.html

MOSCOW - Legislators are holding up a proposed gun bill, and that's just fine with the University of Idaho administration.

A provision in the bill would have forbid local governments and college administrators from banning guns on Idaho college campuses. UI President Tim White said Friday if the bill had passed as written, they'd have a potentially dangerous situation on their hands.

White said the bill isn't dead. The revised version will go to the legislature next week, and from what he's seen, this one will keep guns off campus.

"Give the responsibility for those decisions to where they lie, and that's with the university, and the regents of the University of Idaho, and the State Board of Education to allow, not only for this campuses, but for all campuses in the state. The control should be at the board level," he said.

Anyone from Idaho reading this, check this out: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=341190

So, you guys need to be calling/writing the education folks - "Hey, what are you doing to keep my son/daughter/spouse/me safe while on campus?" Follow up in a day or so with "Hey, why not allow responsible folks with concealed weapons permits on campus?"

Keep at them.

As much as I hate to say it, this one will be vetoed, as our Governor is a moderate Democrat, and an ex-teacher, so this will strike doubly at home for her. DOA.

So you've given up already?

You have potential to change things. Do not take that lightly, and throw it away. Talk to administrators and faculty. E-mail them. Talk to and e-mail legislators. Heck, send the governor a note.

And talk to your friends. One person doing it doesn't work. But if you talk to ten friends, and each of them talks to ten friends... And each of _them_ talks to ten friends...

We had a police chief basically say, "Well, if someone were to use a CCW in self-defense, at a school, our officers would shoot them, so this shouldn't pass."

Wow.. Just, wow! If he can tell us all that, let me take this guy to vegas or the horse track. We'll make a killing! That's some kind of crystal ball he's got there! What's an officer supposed to do if he comes to any pther scene where a concealed weapon has been used in self defense? Just shoot everyone there and ask questions later? Hasn't the memo gotten around to him? The cops don't show up to the scenes of such shooting events in time to do anything else but hang up yellow tape!

bogie, I never give up - I contact my legslators on a regular basis, and the Governor's office as well. I can just see her vetoing this - read some of the pro rights bills she has vetoed in the past, and her letters explaining why.

Some people just cannot be convinced. I live in Michigan. Does anyone here think writing to Jenny Granholm or Carl Levin would really do any good? I'm sorry but if you live in a blue state and have Democrat governors or legislators, you really don't have much of a chance of convincing them to do anything but march lockstep with the Democratic party.

Police and educators here are coming out in force against the law. As was already stated, the LE chiefs are claiming it will make it harder to figure out who the bad guy is and that civilians will shoot each other thinking they are shooting the BGs.

That really shouldn't be too hard to figure out. The one shooting the unarmed people is probably the BG.

Basically what is happening is the same drivel that was dragged out to fight CWP in Arizona in the first place is being dragged out again.

Our governor will be against it and may veto, but that doesn't mean the battle is lost. The state constitution guarantees the right to keep and carry so the restriction on schools may already be unconstitutional in Arizona. A veto may face both a challenge in the legislature and in the courts. But, gun owners will have to be very vocal to help push it through.
